Default 1980 911SC Targa for 60 grand wtf?

Based on what I have been reading in the past few months, common opinion was that the SC was supposed to be "a $25k car", meaning a good one would cost that much, and one that cost less would need upgrades for the difference. However, most of the decent looking cars (at least on paper) advertised on line are asking close to 30k ore more. Quite a few are deep into the thirties.

Today I stumbled upon one where ask is sixty grand:

http://www.schneidernelsonporsche.co...e008b7f515.htm

Is there something I'm missing? Meaning is there some special reason that justifies that kind of premium (in this car or more in general in the high priced models that are popping up), or is it just that demand is outstripping supply by a huge factor, and what was "a $25k car" is now "a $35k car"?

I'm getting rather depressed, if that's what it costs to buy what was supposed to be the "perfect entry-level 911" then I might as well just forget about it.

It's only got 17k miles on it, which is a big price booster. You can find an "entry level" option with more typical mileage for the prices you sites.

I'd value a quality 3.2 911, whether Targa or Coupe, the same. Heck, I'd maybe put more on the Targa as an open-air sports car.

I'd not pay anywhere near that at this point for any 3.2. Saw a show the other day where a '95 993 was valued at $57K, and not as nice as mine. Ludicrous, and the "gold rush" on air-cooleds is getting tiring.

Asking and getting are two different amounts, usually.

Targa's seem to be catching up, a couple of months ago a 73 911s targa broke price records by passing $300k on this side of the pound. If you have a low miler with full history to back up the mileage claim then it doesn't really matter if its a Targa or coupe as either way its gonna sit in your garage.

A lot of these are dealers trying to flip sales. They buy the car at the market value ($21-24k) wash and wax the car and then sit on it until someone with more money than sense buys it...

Yes for those of us looking to purchase the dealers are buying everything up and doubling the price. I've been looking for a nice 74 - 98 for a while now and its tough to find one fairly priced.

The enthusiast sites always prefer a coupe to a targa. For more than a decade the valuations from professionals have consistently placed targas higher.

A condition 3 SC, which is a nice driver with sound mechanicals, is a $25k car. Want a 2 or a show car? The sky is the limit.

I too do not envy anyone shopping. Glad I've got mine.

993 Coupe for $32K seems like a better deal.
