My friend's old SC with around 30,000 miles has sold twice in the last 6 months. First for $45,000 and then for $50,000. Seems to be the value of the close to perfect cars. I'd wish mine was that nice but I would just drive the wheels off it

I have mixed emotions about this sort of thing, as an owner of a well cared for '88 I like to think I could get decent money if I sold but then these prices tend to bring in speculators and that sort of messes things up for the true enthusiasts. Then of course I'd be a buyer in this market and thats not good. Oh well, we aren't talking about insulin here...it's just old cars. Many years ago I was into BMWs and I wonder if any of them are seeing this sort of appreciation. I really wanted one of the original M5s and passed on a chance to get one for about 8-9k IIRC, it was a little rough but I bet I can't get one of those now for that low a price.

My brother and I have been going over this for decades.
Something is "worth" what someone else is willing to pay.
I currently own 3 AC 911s, and have felt for years that they are "undervalued".
I can actually remember a time when a 300SL MB was a $6K car, and a Speedster cost about $1,500!!
But there is a frenzy in the Collector Car market today for all kinds of things... Alfas, Triumphs, etc...
Basically, "collector cars" must be valued as art or antiques.... not for their functional value.
There is no question in my mind that a $15K 2.7l Boxster is a better "car" in every objective measure than a 3.2 Carrara, but the latter sells for twice the price because of intangibles such as styling, rarity, and aura, for lack of a better term.... and I would also argue that, even at $30K, a 3.2 Carrara is light-years better investment than a brand new Boxster at $70K...
So, you pays your money and takes your choice.
