Juddering reverse
My 1966 Porsche 912 has started to judder and vibrate when reversing. It is becoming almost impossible to reverse uphill.
Does anyone know what may be causing this?
It does not hapen when i pull away forwards.
I've also posted this in the 912 forum, but more people seem to view this one.
Any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Paul

Sounds to me like your reverse gear might have some missing teeth. It's pretty common in those older trans/ I've had that same thing happen in a 914 where it shudderd when goin in reverse. Started out not too bad then got really bad. Took the trans out tore it down and reverse had probably obly 60 percent of its teeth left.
I just replaced the entire trans with a used one and it was all better...
Hope this helps.. you have a 66 so its the 901. Those are pretty common to wear from what i hear.

I've heard that this could sometimes be caused by oil on the clutch plate which has leaked through from the motor, but thinking about it, I'm not sure if this would apply to the 911 layout.
Anyone else heard this?

True true.
I had this problem with my Mazda and it only really manifested itself in reverse.
The only forward gear it appeared in was first and only after very hard running. I took out the performance clutch and put a stock back in and it went away. Can't offer more comment than that I'm afraid
Someone else with more clutch experience will have to help....
