1983SC Shifting question
I finally got my 1983 SC on the road after getting through inspection and registration. I am just learning to shift the thing and I am having a tough time finding 3rd gear from 2nd gear. I sometimes start to go back into 1st gear from 2nd. Is there supposed to be any type of spring centering force that wants to keep the gear shift in the 3-4 center gate or is this just a feature of the 915 transmission I need to get used to? The car goes into gear fine once I select the right gate, but I have an uneasy feeling I am going to end up in 1st on a quick 2-3 gear change.

It does not have any kind of a spring. There are some Gated shifters that you can buy to add that feature. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I am fine with it the way it is. Some of the aftermarket shifters also have revers lockout so you wont accidentally do that

Hi, There's no spring. If you're having trouble finding your gears it sounds like your shift linkage may be out of adjustment, or need new bushings.
I had a shifter that was way loose. I opened the rear access panel on the floor in front of the rear seats and found that the set screw holding the rear coupler to the tranny shaft was not even screwed in all the way! Hope your problem is as easy to find.

Sorry, to the point of this thread, i'd check the entire linkage out and replace any worn bushings...new bushings and tighten things up and it will be better (but still vague).

Hi
Just had to post because I got a chuckle from your post. When I first started driving mine you would have thought I never drove a stick shift in my life. Oh these cars are one of a kind. Take your time and it will come to you before you know it, and once you do let us know.
Good luck.
