Default Iceman is shot down but not pulling the chute

Well it has been a tough year for theiceman. To top it off I went to do my valve adjust and after removing the valve cover, an exhaust stud fell out.
My heart sank as I know what I am in for. So I sadly put the car cover on it and went inside.
There is no doubt some bills in my future and with a bathroom Reno half done this project will sit for quite some time
It is certainly not beyond my ability but just a real bummer way to wrap up my year. Close inspection showed a serious leak between head and cylinder. This could be serious if the head or cylinder has damage

Oh well. Onward and upward

Oh my, as you are aware, I know the feeling oh too well. Once you get into it.... let me know if you need any tools. I've collected several of the past two years.

Don't you have about 250-300k on there now?
It sucks to get a candygram from your car but think how sweet it will be when done over...like new.
I really no longer worry about what I put into my SC, I know it's a keeper and it'll go when I do.

Clive, sad news.
In my current financial state, I'd be trying to remove the broken stud and wind a new one in there without pulling it all apart. Is that possible? Maybe just pull the rocker box off?
But that's just me, cause I'm broke!

Good luck.

Hey frank

It's broken down in the cylinder. And the rest is held in the case with epoxy. Needs complete tear down of at least that side.

Everything on hold till I get some other projects done.

That sucks. Just think how clean it will be after you fix it.

Iceman,

My condolences:-(

At least it is not the end of the line for the motor versus the water-cooled 911 engine turning into a useless paperweight without warning.

Now you can save up for some upgrades

New headstand costs about $10. The bummer is all the "might as well" stuff.

Re-do heads, all new studs, valve springs, cams probably worn, cam chains & gears, tensioners, new clutch, etc, etc, etc.

These cars can run with lots of worn parts, but guilt dictates not to put them back. Probably looking at $4-5K in parts and machine work, even if you can do most if it yourself, but it will also take a year, so this works out to $400/mo on the "installment" program. Plus beer, of course.

But, once your done, you'll be good to go for 20 more years.

I smell a 3.4L with twin plugs in your future!

Good luck. Sorry to hear about the exhaust stud.

Beer should double the budget easily.
I think this time around I'm just going for a repair. Although the thought of a 3.2 with 964 cams sounds reasonable.

A lot will depend on what parts are worn as pointed out

First things first. I need to find a yoke

I have a the adapter ring that bolts to a standard engine stand. (currently on loan)
Using long bolts and pipe, I was able to stand it off 6 inches so i could mount the motor, clutch and all.
I have a pair of Z-blocks and dial gauges as well.
Bore gauge, degree wheel, micrometers, Stomski cam sprocket alignment tool, etc....
