Ed, come on....You admit to spending upwards of $50,000 on the purchase and "upgrades" to make your G-series Targa a worthy road machine. Your 993 hasn't "required" anywhere near that kind of outlay. The car came almost perfect and ready to go and was far far far less money. Oh wait, I guess I just made your point.

I dismissed the lunacy portion of my 3.2. Maintenance for maintenance is about a wash, IMO. Nothing wrong with a stock 3.2 or SC, but I've actually found it easier to resist the urge to modify the 993. For the most part.

this is a fun post. Ok, So I am in the dc area too. Started my affair with porsche in 2002 with anew booster, right off the showroom floor at Tischer. I was young and recently married and loving it. Fastforward to the early childhood years and the car gets sold for a benz wagon. Hilarity ensues, and four years and a minivan later, my wife says you have paid your dues, get what ever car you want…I jump to it and find a 2008 macadamia brown 997 that she loved. And then the 2012 new carrera came out, and my lease was up so guess what…theres a 2012 in my driveway. My wife grew up sitting behind her dad in a 1973 911 targa. and despite all the whiz bang of the new cars.. SHE decided that we needed to add an older targa to the family. SHE picked out a 1978 911sc targa that will be her weekend whip. Got it just last week, getting it properly sorted, but what a difference between it and everything else. Cliche as it is, it is raw and elemental Porsche. I race home after work (in the 2012) just to drive the 1978 targa around the neighbor hod, to the store, and on the beltways Esses…pure joy, just like all of the m, but uniquely different…just like all of them. The booster was telegenic in its turn in and feedback, the other cars became bloated and less "direct" in their input and feedback. The 91sc is pure input and feedback, no fat and all fun. Enjoy
To the OP, you got some good advice earlier that if maintenance per year will be a big factor, then the newer offerings - Boxster, Cayman - post IMS issue will serve you well in that regard.
Of course the trouble with the older ones is that IF the previous owner wasn't good about maintenance, your first year will be a bear. The last 3 Carreras I've owned were 'good' cars, not showroom, but really good.
I spent a small fortune 'catching up' on the services during my initial tenure as owner. AFTER THAT, they were very reliable, fun, rewarding machines. So just keep that in mind if you continue going down the vintage path. Hope this helps.

Also, a comparison of C4S and 3.2 rotors is somewhat deceptive. A comparison between C2 and 3.2 is more representative and closer due to greater numbers of C2's.
I did my suspension on my 993 a couple of years ago. Barring any issue with the Bilsteins, and at 4k or less miles a year, I'll never touch those components again.
Lastly, your comment on one tire vs a set is just insane. I don't know what kind of tires you buy for your '85 or your C4S, but they aren't anywhere near the same at 4:1. I just spent ~ $1000 for 4 new Bridgestones on my 993. Of the 5 or 6 sets of tires I bought for my old '84, they were all in the same range. There are a lot of guys buying Sumis and other such bargain tires for 993 S cars in the $500 range. A search on the 993 sections shows MANY there adopt that philosophy.
I'm sorry, but your comments are VERY subjective. And again, I challenged your statement that 964/993 cars are "more expensive by far" than G Series cars. That simply isn't true- the "by far" comment.

I dont put a lot of miles on it per yr, the miles I do put on it are all long highway miles so the maint cost are pretty low. Last yr I ran up 2000/2500 miles. the yr 2012 it was 1800/ 2000 and 2011 was a whopping 4200 miles. I spread the mileage out between all the cars if i can. I have been very lucky as I havnt had any big ticket failures come up in the past 10/11 yrs.

The valve adjustment is req'd every 12,000-15,000 miles . I do mine at 10,000 miles just to be safe and to ensure the cylinder nuts are not backing off at the same time. I changed my studs to the 930 turbo steel type after time certing the casing many yrs ago and have never regretted it.
