Hello All-

Long term Porsche owner who finally took the air cooled plunge. I purchased a 88 Carrera with 105k miles though a complete top half rebuild done 5000 miles ago. I will drive this car maybe ten times a year and always in the Michigan 80 degree summer season. Car does not leak any oil currently.

I see many threads about Brad Penn and Mobile 1. Any expert recommendations on not only brand but also weight,etc.

Very nice Carrera, that was the car for sale up in Canada at Rivard Competition??

How were those guys to deal with on your purchase?

I have had good luck with Valvoline Racing Oil 20/50, you will likely get as many answers as there are oil brands available. My shop recommended this oil and it seems to be fine for this series of 911 engines.

You are correct. That was the car from Rivard Racing up in Quebec. I had been talking with Renee Rivard for a couple months as the car is a unique vehicle in color combination. I believe only five 911's ever were painted in that turquoise color and this is only one with white linen interior. Might not ever be able to sell her but I love the combination. He is great to work with. He speaks French as a first language so occasionally i would have to ask questions again via email. No complaints at all with him.

There are multiple options that combine the proper wear characteristics needed for the flat tappets on the cams and the temps seen on the "air cooled" flat six of 911. It is really up to your own tastes but a much harder decision than just going to Wally World and getting the flavor of the month. Valvoline VR-1 and Brad Penn seem to be the most popular but there are others and generally, use dino rather than synthetic.

I had talked to Olivier about the car. He seemed like a nice fellow and I gather he is Rene's son. The difficulties of getting the car from the far corner of Quebec in this midst of this un-ending winter kept me from moving ahead.

The turquoise and linen combination must be very rare as you say. It is a fantastic combination. My Porsche 911 "Red Book" 1965-1999 lists it as a standard color for 1988 but I can honestly say I had never seen it before seeing this Carrera.

You will have no trouble selling it, just PM me when you are ready !!

+1 on the Valvoline VR-1. Not too tough to find locally . Price is reasonable as well.

You are correct that the turquoise color is not "paint to sample". It is a factory standard color that year that it appears very few had the "courage" to buy I guess. It took me 4 months of debate and research to finally pull the trigger. As I discussed with people it was 50/50 who loved/ versus hated the color.

The winter is awful in Quebec and in Ann Arbor Mi where I live. As a result the car hasn't even been picked up yet. I am having it delivered April 1. Looking forward to snow finally going away.

Yeah, the oil debate is too much for me. I just buy Valvoline VR-1 and call it good. I still have a stockpile of oil from about 6 years ago when I bought every quart in the city. It was on sale for around $2~3 per quart. That sure beats paying shipping for BP or buying it from the trunk of some guy's El Dorado like Amway soap.

And you are buying 20/50 ? Or different weight?

In my 964 I found the following. When using BP and Valvoline VR1, it burned a quart every 1K miles. When I put in M1 15-50 (red top, NOT the extended performance stuff) consumption fell where I only added 1/2 a quart at 2K miles. Same with Liqui-Moly MOS 2 10w40. Since I can get Red Line at work I am going to put in 15w50 when I change the oil this week and see how that does.

+1 on the Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic ... been using it for the past 4 years and i stockpile whenever it
goes on sale !
