Default Horrible noise 993 help!

Ok so this is definitely just a fair weather weekend carver. I drove it two weeks ago and it's been in the heated garage on the battery tender since. Went to start it today and there is this horrible ticking noise. I was thinking either a lifter failed or an exhaust leak. I have the fabspeed supercup exhaust. Here's a video of the noise.

You'll probably get a better response on the 993 forum.

Exhaust leak unless there is some super high pitched tapping sound I'm not hearing. That is classic single cylinder exhaust leak.

I think you might have a bad or lazy lifter, but +1 on getting advice on the 993 forum.

...So there is a tap tap tap that I'm too deaf to hear?

Yeah, there's a few things going on there. First, the exhaust is pounding away, but there is a slower frequency tap-tap-tap. Hard to tell exactly how loud it is. The OP should use a mechanic's stethescope or long metal rod pressed to the ear to isolate which cylinder it might be, and whether it's intake or exhaust.

Listening to that over and over. I can't say it's not an exhaust leak. The muffler is just so loud, it's really hard to tell in that video.

I have one of those, much to Loren's chagrin.

LOL! Maybe the OP can try to block out the tailpipe noise and re-post a vid? Or try to get closer to the noise that he's hearing?

aside from the exhaust pounding... sounds like valve tappets. Are you using mobile 1 synthetic? Did you have this noise prior to storing it?

PATIENT: "Doctor, my neck makes a funny sound when I move it like this..."

DOCTOR: "Then don't move it like that"

Seriously, given the $15K+ cost of a 3.6L motor rebuild, I'd consider taking the car to you local Porsche Specialist.

Hopefully, its just a bad exhaust gasket, or a loose mount, or exhaust baffle... but if there is an engine problem, fixing it now will be a lot cheaper than cratering the motor.

Hey thanks for all the reply. I'll post this in the 993 forum as well. Yah there is a higher pitch tapping noise associated with it. I'll have to try out the stethoscope. Using full synthetic and the car ran flawlessly last time I drove it. The nearest porsche specialist is in Boise but I have a flatbed trailer and a truck so I'll take it up. What is the name of your son on his mission? My pops is the stake mission coordinator lol!
