Where does a hot rod cross the line and become an unacceptable frankenporsche.

Is it in the build / detail ?

I am curious since I always find myself leaning toward the 'different'

depends on the beholder. Are you a purest? If you are, then they will all be frankenporsches if modded (meaning not factory).

The quickest way for me to call out Frankenporsche is when I see a small block Chevy engine stuffed in the back.

Because one of the fundamental draws the Porsche brand has is owner specific personalization, the bar is set rather high to begin with. Modifying the car is almost a requirement in my book. I don't want a vanilla car. ....and frankly, leaving it up to the original owner or the dealerships to decide what my car should look and act like is ludicrous. So, yah, perhaps rocker delete on a G50 tub is a bit overboard....but it's mine and I like it.

That's an interesting question, and not easy to pin down, as it can be very different from person to person.
For me, any mods have to be consistent with the lineage. That's not to say they have to be period correct, but they should be in keeping with the overall design, or have some historical basis. For instance, if it's not a turbo, it shouldn't have turbo tail. I'm ok with back dating, but no so keen on forward dating. I would never consider putting a 993 body kit on my '88. That's like pretending it's something it's not.
My plan is to do a duck tail and IROC style bumpers on my '88 at some point, being fully aware that that combination never existed. I'm just not up for doing the full long hood conversion. I don't like the impact bumpers and I'd like to reduce the lift in the rear but don't want to go with the full tail either. For me, I like the look of cars I've seen with that combo, and it's functional as well as cosmetic. I'm sure there are some that would not find this to be a positive direction, but it's my car.
Taking away, stripping down, simplifying the car tends to not cause such negative reactions as adding a bunch of stuff to the car that was't there to begin with.

'Taste' is an individual thing so please yourself. I like modified but with a traditional look, something that would have existed during the cars heyday.
I think the key is quality work/mods....slipshod = FrankenPorsche to me.

i completely agree with Ian. I have a 95 993 with a ducktail and a 73 with a 3.6 and RS flares. The 73 also has a louvered license plate panel and drilled door handles which some people don't like, but as amber lamps said - it's mine & I like it!

I hear you on quality of work. Several times I have scrapped my own work and tried again. My budget ebbs and flows so often that I have often cut corners only to go back six months later and done it again. Sometimes you gotta put all the options on the table and see what looks best. Sometimes less is more....sometimes.

Personally....I like it a lot as I'm a big fan of those tail lights. I'd like to see more pics and how those tail lights look without the complimentary longhood.
