Dear Sirs,
I wonder if I could use unleaded petrol in my porsche 911 3.2 Carrera (1987) 231 CV. This car comes originaly with leaded 98 petrol. No cat.
Are the valve seats hardened?
Can I switch to unleaded? what is best unleaded 95 or 98.
Thank you for your help,
Regards,
Antonio Navajas

98 octane in Europe is the equivalent of 92-93 octane in the U.S.. Europe uses a different method of calculating the octane number, more specifically, they use RON, while the U.S. uses RON+MON/2. The U.S. method yields a lower pump octane number.
I believe the 1987 Carrera 3.2 for the North American market was rated at 217hp, while the RoW was rated at 231hp. Due to U.S. emissions regulations, the U.S. version had a catalytic converter and lower compression, which I believe accounts for the difference. It has nothing to do with the fuel though.

To answer the original question - is unleaded ok? Yes, it is - my Carrera spent it's first 11 years in Germany. It was a non-cat leaded petrol 98 RON spec car.
A Cat was fitted five years into it's life - it seems this was done for German Tax / Emissions reasons. It was done by a Porsche Dealer and entailed simply adding a catalyst and adding a narrower petrol nozzle reciever below the petrol cap to ensure unleaded only fuel. No DME changes seem to have been made.
I ditched the Cat two years ago and replaced it with a test pipe - she's slightly louder now
. I've chatted to various specialists and they have reported that 95 RON Unleaded will probably not do any harm - many owners seem to use it without problems. I used what we call over here 'Super Unleaded' most of the time (97-98 RON) until Shell Optimax was released last year. It's a guranteed 98 RON and definitely gives the car an extra oomph....
