Most of the techniques guys chat about are actually to get in in gear quickly (quicker) and cleanly.
I love my SC, went for a short drive yesterday and 150 miles latter got back to the house.
That is great advice on the "place not shove" about shifting gears. I know exactly what you mean. Can't wait to do a 150 mile run at one go.....

My first 911 was an 88 Targa and I currently have an 86 930 and I've driven several other Carreras. I purchased a nice 81 SC recently and I LOVE this car!

The biggest difference to me is that my SC revs like it has a lightened flywheel compared to Carreras. I've had to adjust how I press on the throttle when I blip it on down shifts. And yes, the thing does feel more nimble and lighter too. It is a wonderful car.

I've thought that I could never part with my 930, now I think I could if I had to.

Cool Now I own it

Finally the 1982 911SC is legally mine, title and keys in hand. Have to wait till next week for the DMV paper work process before I can drive. After all these years realized my dream of owning a 911 AIR COOLED Porsche! Have always loved the styling and engineering in those Porsches, now I own one. Pinch me.

Need some advise on winter tires? Can I put the same size on all 4 wheels? Also, what if I put narrower tires as long as I keep the same R size (16"). Say, 205/55 or 195/xx for e.g.?

What are the width of your wheels 6" up front and 7" out back? Tires usually have a width range of an inche so you might be able to do that if you had too.
Just check the tire manufacturer's specs.

You can use a link like this to compare different tire sizes:
http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos

On another car, I used this to compare
summer 235/45R17
vs.
snow tire of 205/55R16

The site shows the difference in circumference, diameter, etc.
You need to be within a certain tolerance. Mine was 1" different, which was fine.
Do some searching.

Reiver, PushingM....thanks. Will check out the link.

Current regular/summer tiers are Front: 205/55 ZR16, Back: 225/50 ZR16. Which leads me to believe that Reiver may be right, that my car has 6X16 and 7X16 (they are FUCHS).

If true can I mount 205/50 r16 on all four wheels? Can I go any narrower say 195 width tire for better traction? I am also thinking of getting 15" wheels just for winter tires, steel wheels would be fine.

You have the 6-7's on there with that tire size...that was an upgrade on the invoice btw.
Lots of less expensive winter wheel/tire combo's out there and that's the route I'd go.
When you do get tires mounted on your Fuch's take it to a good shop....that alloy gets banged up if the guy isn't paying attn.

Just realized the previous owner didn't drive in winter and has 20W-50 oil in the engine. I am thinking of changing to a 10W-40 for winter, may be a Penn 10W-40 racing oil (hopefully I don't have to change it back in summer). While we have good winters, temp (F) normally stays in teens and may dip to single digits when windy occasionally. Would like some input. Thanks in advance.

Good tip on protecting the wheels. Also, i can use same size winter tires on all wheels (6 & 7) right? Want to make sure, since summer tires have different front and back sizes.

Yes, you can use the same size all around no problem.
Afterthought...if the diameter is diff your speedo will be off (more off lol) as they all seem to be from 6-10 mph optimistic from the factory.

I wouldn't put winters on my Fuchs.
Get some cheap aftermarket or steelies for your winter/all season tires.
Less risk taking tires on and off and you will find out how expensive Fuchs are if you drift into a curb. Also it will be chaper , if you figure about a hundred bucks to remount and balance 4 tires , twice a year , you may as well just buy winter wheels. They will last you 4-5 winters.

What is your location. ?

If you don't expect snow I would go with an all season. deep snow you are not taking the Porsche anyway.

BP sells a 15w40 but it is NOT a racing oil, i use it October - May here in Canada but i dont drive it all Winter.

BP lists their oil as 'racing oil' to get past the no ZDDP regs but they all have the street additive packages in them for long term use.

Iceman, I intend to drive exactly like that, i.e., not all winter but only when conditions are right. We do get few sunny days here in the middle of the winter in upstate NY. I am also considering good all season tires as well. If any one brand is better than the other would love to hear it.

I am hunting for steel wheels, looking at some on ebay, 944 (phone dials) and 912 wheels, hoping it would fit the SC.

To continue on Revier's point, should I care if it is mineral or synthetic oil for winter. Being an older car I keep reading that synthetic will be not good in summer especially. What about Shell Rotella 5W-40 for all season up here?
