Why don't you take your comments and useless queries to the water cooled forum and ask what they hate about air cooled cars ...

Perhaps ,you can educate yourself on the mechanicals of both models and you wouldnt need to post senseless ramblings !

Just sayin ...

One can actually take the time to read here, too. You'll see there is a lot of good-natured ribbing. It's usually because guys come to this forum to ask about new cars, and they take a bit of a ribbing. There are distinct differences in feel between the eras.

PML,don't get me wrong ... if my 89 air cooled 911 morphed into a 997 GT3 RS overnight i wouldn't shed any tears !

Cheers

Asking about hate between air-cooled and water-cooled you want to learn anything?

Buy a car, that way you learn. It took me 4 weeks between the decision to buy one and driving one. I did my own PPI and not knowing anything about Porsches I did not realize how heavy it was modified (which saves me a lot of time and money because I would have done these mods anyway). Only afterwards I started reading in forums. Not necessarily the right thing to do but reading your posts I have doubts you actually will ever buy one. Life is about doing things not asking weird questions.

I even love 996's, as long as the rear lid says GT3 on it. Almost bought one recently, but I'm sticking with air-cooled for now.

Amber said it. It's not about hate, it's about loving the other.
I've had 3 aircooled and 4 watercooled. Currently have 1 of each. I certainly don't hate either. They're different and better in their own ways. It's only a preference of qualities...but here, on the 911 forum, it's about air cooled 911's. I go over to the 997 forum when I want to discuss 997's.

But let me put it another way...I'm obsessed with Porsches in general. Air, water, who cares? They all kick *** one way or the other. I'm hooked on the brand.

The air cooled cars are extremely simple machines. Very well engineered, elegant works of art. I've had mine up on jacks for nine months now doing simple resto-mods. The poor thing is more RS/GT every month. Eventually I'll put the wheels back on.....not anytime soon, but eventually. Maybe after the splitter is done.

No hate here. I was actually considering a 996 before I purchased my 993. I came into Porsche from air cooled Volkswagens. Bought an '85 Carrera first, the transition from air cooled to air cooled seemed natural. When shopping for an upgrade I ultimately ended up with the 993. Tim Holt steered me away from the 996 saying that that was not really what I came in looking for. I'd have to say that he was right, I really wasn't ready for a watercooled car at the time.

Why not drive both types and see which you like better?

No hate here. Both are sets of cars that represent advances in engineering and are different. I loved my '88 3.2 targa and my '10 C4S is amazing on how much car has advanced in 25 years of engineering.
Because of my '68 912, I do get to some 356 events and some of those guys believe that the 356 is the only true Porsche and that the 911 is the oddity. I guess it is just a perspective....

To concur with everyone but the OP, it's an M96 engine thing. Period. Now I'll grant you could go back to the Olden Days and find similar bitching about up-to-3.2L NA/3.3L Turbo, and the factory delivering a wholly deficient design with the chain tensioning system OR 2.7L head stud pulling. But the M96 intermediate shaft bearing design on the pedestrian water cooled engines--from a manufacturer that, while sometimes making things unnecessarily complicated, never resorted to cheap-*** design--pushed it to a whole 'nother level.

If I were expensive car shopping, I'd gladly take (preferably) a 996 GT2 or GT3. Maybe even a Turbo.

(Realize water cooling has been around on 911 engines since, I think, 1978. Might have been something that snuck out in '77, but that was a couple of years before my time.)

Good man,....I'd strongly encourage you to stay on course with your MO since that's precisely how you learn new things.

Thats it, in a nutshell. The lack of love is due to a general disappointment with Porsche regarding those powertrains and everything that it entails (huge subject).

The GT-3, GT-2, & Twin-Turbos' have completely different engines & transmissions and such feelings are vastly better.
