Sorry if I generated the impression that I did that coupler cover on my own. That is professionally made in exactly the same shape as the original metal cover. I got it from dp Motorsport.

Here's the current status of a customized carbon fiber solution with a wevo shifter. Mind you - this is my first CF project ever. Will wrap a thin section of the edges with the old leatherette material that was on the old console. Thoughts?

Not bad! Now you can prob put a leather boot on there to cover up the guts of the shifter.

Thumbs up

Thanks. I thought about a cover early on - but I love the mechanics of the Wevo and feel it needs to be shown.

To finish the opening get some of those black flexible door edge paint guards and cut to fit the perimeter.
Looks very good, nice job.

:O Wow thats sweet! Very nice for your first time. Was it a pain to make a mold for it?

I thought about making a fiberglass mold (which I probably should've done). However, what I did was honestly an experiment that turned out surprisingly well.

I created an overall template from lexan. Then I bought some expanding foam material (not that home depot stuff) and mixed it and poured into a cardboard box lined w/ plastic wrap. Once that finished setting, I cut it flat and used the template to mark the spots that needed to get sanded down to create the "positive" mold structure. After sanding it (which was a mess), I lined it with Gorilla ducttape and then another layer of packing tape. Two coats of wax, one shot of hairspray, and then some release agent.

The rest of the process was just a normal CF layup from what I've seen/read.

I did not use a vacuum bag either.

A better process would have been to remove the seats and carpeting and create a proper fiberglass mold to use as a "negative" mold. If I was going that route, I'd also use a vacuum bag to make it. Honestly, I was just trying to get familiar with the process and to experiment a bit. I might actually go the proper route and see what results I get. I'm tempted to fabricate an airbox cover as well. That "carbon fiber looking" one just doesn't cut it as it's gotten horrible reviews overall.

All along the process I was wearing gloves, goggles and a respirator. Safety first!

In between attempts at getting this smog'd (still failing), I wanted to finish the cover. I took some advice from here and my wife and found some 1/8" U-trim at TowerHobbies (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXG852). Also put an additional coat of resin on the top for a glossy finish.

I'm happy with the results and assuming I pass CA smog this year will create a proper CF air box cover.

Here's the final results.

Man that looks great, especially with those shifter mechanicals sticking out. I wonder if we could get a group buy going so I could have my carbon fiber guys tool this up and start pumping them out
