I hate this forum. Keeps me busy to modify my car.
So I pulled the center console this evening. Apart from the need to find a new home for the switches, it opened up another can of worms. Not only is the look of the G50 shifter a little uninspiring, there is another opening in the tunnel in front of it. I did not expect this one. As I don't want to re-install carpet, I will need to figure out a good looking solution to cover it...

Hi all. I have just carried out this mod to my 86 model. Really like the look without the ugly plastic box. I covered the opening with a plate then reglued the carpet down. With careful application of glue I found the join is almost invisible. I did have to cover two mounting holes with penny washers sprayed black, which look ok.
I relocated the screen demist and hazard switches onto a small home-made bracket just under the dash, so not visible unless you crane your neck, but easily reached for the occasional use that these switches get. The photo makes it look a bit scruffy but I have realigned the switches since taking the photo.
Hope this is useful.

Well, I am still in the cleaning process as I don't want to re-install carpet. Getting the old glue out is no fun. I am still no sure what to do with the ugly G50 shifter. I cleaned the aluminum base and sprayed it with clear coat but still there must be a nicer way.

i agree with you that the Wevo shifter looks nice and not as flimsy as the stock one. But I think the amount of dollars they want is next to a joke. Other than that, very nice. I am thinking spending the money for the Rennline (or similar) pedal.

I saw a thread around somewhere that somebody used a $3 thrift shop leather jacket, cut it to fit around the boot and secured it somehow. It actually looked really good.
You could always get the Hargett shifter. Similar price as the Wevo, but at least you get more for your money! http://hargettprecision.com/index.ph...0-shifter.html
Maybe you could fab up a wicked cool gated shifter while your at it
