Testament to the strong values, I just went into the trading post in the Porsche Post magazine. An '87 Targa w/ 82k on the clock is listed for $24,900 and an '87 928 S-4 w/ 37k on the clock and is very clean, is listed for $13,900! The S-4 was the King P-car of that day, monetarily.....

Nope! I think the 928's ship had sailed at that point. It was introduced around '80 as an actual replacement for the SC. I believe whomever then took the reigns of Porsche at that time, decided not to shelf the 911 and put a major effort into the 3.2 generation as a comeback. By '87, the 928 S4 was a good $20k more than a Carrera, so "monetarily" it was king, but the Carrera really held the crown!

Researched for 6 years. Finally bought 88 911. Paint was not perfect. Passed PPI. Everything worked. Paid $15k.
Drove 2 years. Live near North GA mountains. Car was a blast.
Car starting using oil. AC stopped working. It was crap when working. Needed top end rebuild. Might as well put in new clutch while dropping the engine. $10k in work needed.
Put it on Craigslist. Had dozens of calls in 48hrs. Could not keep the phone from ringing. Sold for $14.5k with full disclosure and basically got to drive 2 years for $500. Loved every minute of it.
What other car can you do this? Would do it all over again in a minute.

Oil wise, I don't think one exists that doesn't burn it, even the new models! lol

No one has any clue where prices will be in 5 years. Not even the world's best supercomputer.
There are 1000's of variables that will affect this. If depreciation is an issue, you might want to rethink if you can afford this. As Nick said, you can buy for $25k, and need a $15k engine rebuild (if the internet is to be trusted) I am brand new here, and do not own a P yet, but I would not go into this worrying about costs. An exotic 30 year old car is for people who have some money to **** around. Just my opinion, of course. Good luck.

Full rebuilds are actually somewhat rare, except for some, earlier years. Or, the odd mis-shift, or catastrophe. They will get more frequent as time goes by, certainly, and cars get old and change hands and succumb to lack of proper care-perhaps.
The fact is, there is no reason an SC or Carrera-what most here drive-cannot easily hit 200k or more miles, if they are looked after. That is why buying a 120k mile example is not foolish, if one knows what they are getting. If one were to drive that car on weekends and such, 5k/year, that is another 16+ years of motoring goodness. At that point, an '83 SC would be 36 years old, and a tear down for inspection and needed upkeep may be prudent.

First 911 I had was a mint '87 Cab which I bought for $30k owned for 2 years, put about 25-30,000 miles on then sold for $30. This was very late 90s and bought my '88 Coupe (for about $16k) prior to selling the Cab. I rebuilt the engine down to the core some time ago and was amazed how good a shape the internals were, bearings looked nearly perfect and everything measured in spec. I obviously replaced everything but it backs up what Ed said. I only rebuilt it b/c it was using oil due to valve guides and I ended up breaking off some starter ring teeth and had to drop the engine anyway.

$15k is for a complete rebuild, which should only happen maybe once in a car's life. A top end, every 150k or so, shouldn't set you back more than $8-10k unless you do upgrades.
