Default 1986 Carrera problem, central locking

I'm wondering if anyone knows the fix to this. My 86 Carrera's passenger side door lock will open from the locked position, but will not stay locked when I either use the key to lock the doors or lock it from the inside when getting out and using the key to lock the drivers door. I need to go to the passenger door and manually lock and close the door. The same thing occurs with the console mounted button. The button unlocks from inside the car, but will not lock the door. Bad wire? I followed the manual for central locking with the key, with both doors started in the unlocked position, but no dice. Thanks for any help.

I had the exact same problem. My fix was to rip it all out.

I believe your problem is a short in the passenger door actuator.

If the lock solenoid does not "full" travel the system will automatcally UNLOCK.

I think the ball socket on the mechanism may have split out and you are not getting full travel of the mechanism. The old ball socket is not available anymore, but I found the ball socket for the automatic heating system rod works very well. I would check the rod on the mechanism to verify that is the problem and if it is, Pelican has the ball sockets P/N 999-168-021-40-M100 for $2.50.

Thanks, I'll check it out!

I recently had this problem. The locking solenoid in my driver's door went south. You can check by removing the door panel and then disconnecting the wiring harness to the faulty solenoid. If it is indeed bad, then once disconnected, your locks should work again by key and with the central locking system. A replacement solenoid set me back $30 from one of the dismantlers (I couldn't find one on Pelican).

I just fixed this issue on my 89. The effort to move the mech was too much for the solenoid. Lubrication of all moving parts was all that was needed. WD-40 and some spray lithium grease and she works a charm now. I did both doors BTW to make sure all was well for the long term

When I had this same issue it turned out to be a broken door lock rod. Once I replaced it, everything worked fine.

I posted a couple pics here:
