You absolutely need to evacuate your a/c system completely evacuated because there more than likely moisture in it before you add any refrigerant
If you do not evacuate and THERE IS absolutely ANY MOISTURE IN your a/c system whatsoever; the water/H2O/moisture WILL REACT WITH THE refrigerant gases and turn into ACIDS
after you re-add/charge your a/c system with refrigerant and these acids will start the process of eating the metal of your various a/c components from the inside of the refrigerant passages starting with copper then aluminum etc
it will take a little time before this acid caused by moisture reaction with the refrigerant has eaten the metal inside all your metal a/c components and you discover your refrigerant leaks out again
which will cost you big time replacing expensive a/c components with brand new ones

Drifting
86NOH20 you say your a/c system has not been charged for years

Please explain just how moisture can migrate into a system that has been sealed and then pressurized well above atmospheric pressure for many years

Wouldn't the dissicant in the dryer have long since "absorbed" any moisture trapped in the initial refrigerant filling...??
