Default Normal Temp, Press 79 911s

New to me 1976 911 S with 45k. Transmission crunchy, PPI says motor good.

Anyone think the oil press and temp look right for completely warmed up at idle per photo attached? Looks like the old 250 deg F level on temp and pressure cruises at 1.5.

Experience appreciated. js

Looks a bit high to me. Have you confirmed ignition timing advance?

Default 76 911 Oil Temp

Thanks guys, that is a 76 911 S and no trombone cooler (yet).

The ambient was 60 deg F. in the pic Its been cool since I got it two weeks ago and this seems to be where it runs. Flat level ground, long uphil grade didn't really change it much.

I intend to get rid of the thermal reactors (I assume they are still in there). The oil pressure starts cold at 3.5 bar but when the temp reaches the level shown in the pic it is down to about 1.5 at 60 mph. Hot idles about half that as per picture. I was concerned if the heat was high the oil viscosity might be low accounting for the lower oil pressure.

It's a nice straight orig car and I don't know yet if it will be tracked or not. I have a 997 I use for HPDE but those tires are getting pricey and its a cabrio.

My new plan is win the lottery this weekend and buy a GT3. Anyone else want one while I'm ordering, ha, ha.

yeah 1.5 at 60mph certainly doesnt sound right either. either the guages are wrong or your car isnt quite right. Maybe an early owner like yourself will pop on and give 2 cents but i would get that thoroughly checked out .. is your oil level okay ? I would change the oil and oil filter to a 20/50 grade and see what that does, do you know what is in it now ? i wonder what a defective bypass or safety valve would do if it were stuck open ?

I wonder what the compression numbers are. Is the oil really dark black?

Compression all 140 to 145. Timing not checked. New oil and filter after it passed ppi. Not certain of vis but may put some Lucas improver since oil is new.

I don't need to run it till sure. May change the press and temp sensors but they behave consistently.

May have to run on faith in small doses till i see that temp is stable as weather heats up

Make sure you are running 20w-50 oil. The low pressure is my concern.

I'll set timing and get the oil wt up.

Then new sensors and see if the indicators change.

Thanks for ideas. Js

Those temp and pressures are not right. Too hot, and too low. They could be related. The fact you start at 3.5, and go down at temp to 1.5 when driving would be the biggest concern I'd have. The pressure gauge seems to be somewhat functional, based an the varied readings with the temp change after warmed up. Idle pressure is low too.

Compression numbers, while consistent seem on the low side. Could this be a higher mileage, tired engine? Are you sure it's 45k miles?

I'd take a hard look at everything. Could be senders or connections, but it's worth looking at the entire cooling system with a fine toothed comb. Maybe another comp check. How good was the PPI guy?

The oil weight could be the problem with the pressure. If someone put 10-30 in, or something.

Don't mess around with any additives-you mentioned some Lucas product. Use good oil, and you don't need to add anything.

Pretty typical of what used to come through the shop for cars of that era.

And you want to run a 2.7L car on track????? Planning on having as much tied up in it as you've got in the 997?

Yeah Ed, I was thinking the low pressure and high oil temps = blowby, which is why I asked if the oil is dark. I'm hoping the oil is some goofy low vis and it comes up after the oil change.

Well consensus wins out. New 20-50 and will update numbers.

The car appears to be low mileage sat up a lot. Big puff of smoke on start but no other signs of old age. Ppi seemed good but they said "good oil pressure" which we all disagree with. Hmm, as to the timing of oil change that was AFTER ppi and low vis might acct for it. Simple things first.

Changed to new 20-50 oil. No real change in temp or pressure. Previous was Kendall 1 10-40 per ppi I had do it.

So see pic at start of thread. The temp moves to that upper mark everytime and the press responds to rpm readily but cruises at just less than 1.5 bar at 2,000 rpm

I was thinking adding trombone oil cooler since doesn't have one.

Any data on another 76 2.7 l operating parameters appreciated. Js
