Default First of the 911s?

Maybe you guys can help me. I recall vaguely, many years ago, coming across a very early 911 (1964ish) with a dash layout that was different than the ones we have all become accustomed to. Does anybody have any info on those cars? Any photos of that dash layout? I don't believe the car was labeled as a 901, but I could be wrong.

That is when the 911 started to come into play, and was 901 initially, until Peugeot cried fould on numbers with a zero in the middle. The dash stayed pretty constant with the 5 dials.

Thanks Ed, I know the story with the 901 numbering. This car had a dash that was very different. Also, it might have been a 4 cyl model.

Maybe that was it. Can you tell me more? Photos? Should I take this over to the 912 forum? Thanks.

Early 912 w/ 3 gauges.

(I actually "backdated" my 1st 911, the '68 to similar. Used the odo trip meter for the gas gauge, and no my plugs for the outer gauges didn't look especially pretty.)

Thanks so much for the photos and the link to the motor trend article. Yes! That's the car I saw. I bet it would be worth a small fortune today!

A fortune indeed....I like his comment about having Alpha Dog status at Porsche events.
