Alternator woes
#18
Hi Guys,
I have an '86 Carrera and the alternator bearings feel pretty rough. It seems to be charging well enough, but I would like to replace the bearings and maybe the brushes in the back (if it has them?). Do you know of a good source for them? I have heard that completely sealed bearings have too much drag and can over heat and shielded bearings are better. What are your thoughts?
Thanks so much,
Franny

i took a couple of bearing that i bought at a bearing shop and had them pressed in and had no issues in 8 years.
Got Mine at motion Canada but im sure US has similar bearing sales places. just google the numbe ron your bearing. i wish i still had my sales slip from mine but i misplaced it.
The alt shop put the bearings in cleaned it up . Looked brand new .. the guy asks me " is this off a riding lawn mower or something ? .. i said er yeah .. payed him the 30 bucks he wanted and left..

whoa...just saw the update.
I would NOT try to bend the fan shroud. You'll damage it.
If you need clearance on the bottom, then use the nuts on the back to the fan shroud that mount the alternator. Tighten or loosen the nuts so that the fan moves. Most likely it's tilted up or down, not warped off-center.

@ rusnak, thanks for the reply. I measured the fan blades from tips to top of housing. They were equal at 12a o'clock and 6 o'clock. The alternator was flush with the back of the housing.

just doesnt sound right to me when trying to hold an alternator in place.

Yes I know. The 4 magnesium fins that hold the ring do not flex either. They shatter. I'd sooner shim the mounting lugs on the alternator if it came to that, than to try to bend the fan shroud.

If it were off center, even witha rear of alternator flush with mounting ring, would'nt the gap at the opposite side be larger than 1/16" of an inch? I've got a 16th everywhere except the 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock position.

I've always seen the alternator sort of cone in, thus they require tapping and persistence to get out of the fan shroud. If the alternator just flops out when the shroud is upside down, then something's wrong. If it's completely tight, then you can re-install it slightly off center and it should be fine.

Thanks rusnak, maybe put a shim or two of somekind at the studs at 6 o'clock and 7? Yeah, it's in there super tight. Wish I'd waited to read your responses. Bought a used housing Sunday night...doh!
