Default 65 911...Resto or Rgruppe?

My dad has finally gotten to the point where he doesn't drive his car anymore. Just too hard on him at 83. The car has sat for a few years, runs needs some TLC. It's a european 65 911, the two liter has been replaced with a euro 73T motor some 20 years ago, we replaced the zeniths with webers years ago. The front pan was replaced and it did get backed into once but was fixed right paint isn't bad but one fender was keyed in a parking lot. We put a new headliner and carpet, we swapped the old seats for a pair of RSamericas just to make it easier to drive but have the worn out originals. I think he would love to see it brought back to life, so the question is, factory correct restoration or some simple Rgruppe mods for fun? It's on deep sixes right now but I have the steelies that could be cool....

It's a '65. Getting to be hostage-to-the-serial-number territory. As was usual in the day, too bad the original engine is gone.

I would post the vin number on all the forums and see if anyone has the original engine. Then restore the car to original showroom condition.

If you cant find the original engine, then your idea sounds fun of having a R Gruppe Car that can be tracked / street driven.

Being the car came from Europe I'm thinking I'd have a ghost of a chance finding the original. I've got plenty of track cars so this would just be a period correct street rod. We also put the lights from my 74 on it to spare the original H1s but they obviously need to go back on. You really forget the lightness and simplicity of the original 911 until you spend some time with these. I have to parse through all the bins of parts and see what we have. Years ago we got the car as a dissaaembled project and put it back together.

Jim,

Will our 3.2L go into your dad's car?

Even if the engine is not original.... I would make it look pristine, period correct... and not cannibalize the body... period correct Recaro sport seats would be fine, don't have to install the originals if you want some more support, fix all the chrome, lights, etc. Just don't cut it in any way to change the body...

Man! I would love to be in your shoes with a car like that... sigh... I want a long nose 911...

That car will only continue to appreciate in value if it's restored. Not so much if it's tracked.

Restore it, regardless if you can find original engine or not!

Resto is where the smart money goes, and will probably pay itself back, if sold.

The hot rods seem to be popular now. The original will always have a place. Small pic from the museum.

Doubt the value of my old '73S has suffered, even though it was a complete track bitch from '97-'01. Whoever owns it now probably wouldn't want to know where all it ended up "off line".............

Well I've had my fun with early 911 racecars this ones a little sentimental and will be a keeper for the street. Roy it would be a bullet with your 3.2 in there but this thing is plumbed for a simpler time. I won't cut it up but the recaro sport seats and wheel, lowered with some bigger tbars and a fresh set of konis might do the trick. I've seen a number of these back on the original steelies, they need a little love. Theres a set if the original ciebe hood lights and tablot fender mirrors in the parts bin but don't think i want to drill the hood or fender. It came with a TUV approved tow hitch on it (leaning on the wheels in the pic) i always wondered what someone was hauling around behind this little car.

Well if it's true 65 it's worth big money, do some searching on the early S site.

I vote for a period correct resto. You can put the original engine back in at a later time if you can locate it.

Ditto.

IMO the 2.4T is fine, you can always rebuild it into an E or S and bang, there's your hot rod...but with classic original 1965 visuals in and out.

I like the idea of the period Recaros or some GTS lookalikes and maybe a Prototipo or 914/6 GT style steering wheel and some updated shocks and bars. A "sleeper" in hot rod parlance, the best of both worlds.
