I went and looked at a early 70s 911 the other day. It appears to have been stolen. The original serial #s have been removed or tampered with. An "A" pilar S/N had been added and the car has been titled and plated with that S/N.
I think I can reconstruct the S/N to get two numbers of which one would be correct. The question is to come clean with the car how would one ever find out what is the real history is of the car? Thanks.

But here's a good place to see if the numbers even make sense: http://www.911specs.com/VIN70s911.htm

I could buy the car and drive it, it has a title and some history on the S/N that is on the "a" pillar but where would I track the orginal vin to find out what happened. I'm looking for some constructive ideas.

A tag that looks like the black one in the photo above (911430XXXX) is correct for a US delivered early 911. If the style is different it is most likely one that was installed after the car was recovered.
FWIW, the silver tag for the '72 T Targa is not correct and was not delivered that way. Someone added that for some reason after delivery.

Keep in mind that many grey market cars came in lacking many SN markings (to meet US requirements) and those companies who federalize cars add them--they don't look original (OEM) but they are legit.

Most turbos and turbo look cars also carry ZZZ #'s on the trunk floor stamping. If it truly looks wrong, photo the #'s and contact your local P.D. If there is a problem perhaps YOU'LL be the one to help stop a theft ring. Also always check the engine #. If the flange that carry's the # is broken off (I've seen this) chances are it's hot. There is NO way that piece can be broken off "Accidentally"
