Smile Looks like it's time for a fanhousing (1989)

My girl is slated to go in to John Holt''s shop (Marrieta, GA) this Saturday. She's getting a repaint and interior restoration (complete).

I had my girl pass through my P-Wrench's shop today to give her a go ahead for the paint shop visit,...He noted that the fan housing has spider-like cracks (unfortunately, many). Looks like she's up for a replacement. Since these are NLA from Porsche (I'm told), looks like Vertex has been used frequently,..sometimes with perfect fit,..others with modification of surfaces...in the end, I've heard of NO "no-goes" with this product,..(fan included). that is, any challenges were resolved..

Anybody tasted this particular fan housing from VERTEX?

Clearly, I'm looking for my best option.

Thanks.

Doyle

It seems there's a good chance of a Vertex needing a massage. I'd look for used options too, although you could end up in the same boat. But, there are a lot of housings out there that are crack free. I'd have no issue buying used, provided the sale would be contingent on your physical inspection.

I paid a tidy sum for a new factory housing for my 3.2. It was not a magnesium but an aluminum housing that was for earlier 911 models.

I have a unit from Vertex on my 83.... Needed some work to make it fit right, plus the fan, plus a new alternator... It was an expensive swap, but no options available at the time...

I'm not sure when the housing changed from being aluminum to magnesium. Come to think of it, I'm not certain that my new housing is aluminum; it just felt heavier that the old magnesium housing. I'll find the serial number on the new housing and post it here later.

My '87 has a Vertex housing with a factory fan. The fan had also developed a strange bulge near the hub so I ordered a Vertex fan at the same time. However, the fans were out of stock so Vertex supplied a brand new OEM Porsche fan for the same price which was great customer service.

The Vertex housing is aluminum, not magnesium like the OEM one and is well made. It fit perfectly and there are no alignment issues. IMO it is an improvement over the crack-prone Porsche housing.

I put the Vertex Aluminum Housing in my 88 Carrera with the factory fan. It fit perfectly. With the Aluminum housing you don't have to worry about corrosion and distortion like the Magnesium ones. Overtightening the alternator band will distort the Magnesium housing. I've had mine on for 3 years now and it works great.

How long ago was this? Maybe I got one of the early production units?

I've had my Vertex housing for 3+ years, no issues at all.
