Default what to buy???? Tips, suggestion, what to look at?

Hello everybody,

I am not yet a Porsche 911 owner but I hope that will change soon. I have absolutely 0 experience with 911s. I have $15000 budget and I would like to buy a 911 that is powerful, targa or convertible with AC that also will keep its value or be a good investment.
My favorites are the 70-73 series.

I don't mind to buy something that is not perfect(exterior, interior), I will do it step by step. The only thing that I would love to use it in the meantime.

Would you buy something that is almost perfect or would you buy a running piece that needs work?
Which 911 series would you offer for starters?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Miki

I may be wrong, but 70-73 running 911 is going to be a lot higher than 15K. You'd be better off looking for an SC, but I could be wrong. What say y'all?

for that money you'll get a nice sc or carrera that needs a bit of work or higher miles. plenty to pick from out there. take your time.

I would think with 15k your options are fairly limited for a car that is in almost perfect condition let alone a project. Would assume a '75 - '84 prod year. SC or a higher mile carrera. on a newer basis you could prob get a beater 964 for that money. A quick look on the classifieds should really answer your question. unless you want a total basket case i dont see a 70-73 for that money. In my opinion SC's are a little unloved and unfairly so.. I have a 77 SC that i got for close to your budget that i love (although quite modified now)

I've seen many more than decent SC's in that range and less, working AC on a 911 though... haha well thats a taller order haha I would keep 2500 around to sort out a system that works. Porsche engineers didn't really care about A/C hell who needs it in Germany

Actually depending on where you are I know of a nice Carrera cab in Phoenix, higher mileage but had a top end job done not too long ago by a top shop in the area called Backs (been around FOREVER, cool guys used to work down the street from them at their old location) anyways last I saw the guy was trying to get about that money for it

imm an analyst at heart so please dont take me opinions as an insult. I am going to comment on your comments.

Hello everybody,

I am not yet a Porsche 911 owner but I hope that will change soon. I have absolutely 0 experience with 911s. I have $15000 budget and I would like to buy a 911 that is powerful on a 15,000 dollar budget you can absolutely not buy a 911 that is powerfull by todays standards . A caravan can beat a sc off the line in stock format , targa or convertible with AC it will have to be a Targa as coupes command a little more and convertibles didnt exist then in any great numbers , and if you did get one it will be raggy, the air conditioning will not work at your price point and if you need good AC i wouldnt even bother with a 911 at that price point that also will keep its value or be a good investment.cars are NOT good investments at what you are looking at as the market fluctuates a lot
My favorites are the 70-73 series. they are commanding big dollars these days and a beater would be more to fix than your investment

I don't mind to buy something that is not perfect(exterior, interior), I will do it step by step. The only thing that I would love to use it in the meantime.
Would you buy something that is almost perfect or would you buy a running piece that needs work?cars that need work are ALWAYS more expensive than finished ones in the end. You are better off finding a nice one that someone is forced to get rid of coz they need cash.
Which 911 series would you offer for starters?SC or 74-77 that has documentation of stud and case work and has been checked for rust

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you guys for all the tips and suggestions.

Pretty much everybody suggested on finding a nice SC. What is the difference between the SC and the Carrera?

What is usually the issue with the AC system? What are the usual problems that has to be checked before?

Which site are you suggesting to check regularly for a nice car other than the usual sites? (ebay, cars.com, here, autotrader)

Thanks again for the help guys, really appreciated. Awesome community.

Cheers,
Miki

biggest difference ,, in fact only real noticeable difference is the motor .. later the transmision but those cars ae out of ur price range anyway.

SC . 3.0 litre CIS engine. intimidating to some, set it and forget it type engine
Carrera Motronic 3.2 litre with electronic fuel injection and significantly more horsepower. Can be chipped for further gains.

other than that later Carreras had a different transmision

AC was just generally never any good on these cars . ducting too small bad design compressor barrier hoses that leak. They can be upgraded and some guys are happy with it but means sinking dollars into it to bring it up to speed.

usualy problems is wide open. There should be a ppi sticky at the top of this page and get Pete Zimmermanns "used 911 story" and dont go looking at cars without it. Great resource.

you can check classifieds at pelican, autotrader .. all the ususal places..
