Backdating a 3.2 Carrera

Don't mind me. I've never been one to be either territorial about a thread nor have a problem with a hijack. Even with my project stillborn, if this thread lives on with backdate pr0n, discussion and information, I'm all for it. I never tire of looking and pretty P-cars. I too want to see that interior once the seats are done in houndstooth. I'm a houndstooth junkie...

Me too...I was originally going with a Black Watch Scottish tartan plaid for the seat centers but the samples I got had too much green which clashed with the car's exterior color.
I've been a fan of automotive houndstooth since GM used it in some of the deluxe interiors in 1968-69 Camaros and, of course, in some early 911's
My (new) upholstery guy referred me a materials supplier, SMS Auto Fabrics, who sent me some really nice blue & black houndstooth samples. I'm anxious to see how it turns out.

It just got a new pan and the carpets haven't been fully reinstalled yet. It's also on the stock seats. I'm probably going to install a lightweight carpet kit, remove the rear seats, put in a half cage with harness bar and order up some seats from GTSClassics or one of the other retro vendors and give the car a Sport Purposes interior look.

The first thing I am going to do on this newly acquired '67 is play with the interior a bit. The paint is presentable and part of the deal is some old retro ATS wheels that predate the cookie cutter.

Why the backdate? In another 5-10 years, you will wish you had it "original". Look at all the longhood cars that spent the late 1970s and early 80s being "updated" to shorthoods. Now they just look silly and need considerable time/money to be put back.
That said, if the car in question was already a wreck/project car, then go ahead, have some fun and make it the way YOU want it to be.. but if you are like a growing number of owners who seem more concerned about future value, leave it alone.

I seriously doubt it. SCs and Carreras may hold their value pretty well over the next few years, but WAY too many were made for them to ever be "special" like the longhoods. But I certainly agree that it wouldn't be wise to modify a really clean, low mileage example.

I would never dream of "molesting" this car with a backdate. But the '85 needs paint no matter what. Once you're no longer in the realm of "original paint" IMO the whole game changes on the mid-year IB cars. That may be biased by my whole "do what you want to make it yours" attitude about cars in general because I really despise the museum mentality that has infected early air cooled cars, and collectible cars in general.
I've got a thing for cars and for architecture, and in both instances my approach is that if it is no longer original, then "restoring" it to include updates, and personal touches becomes an acceptable approach. The front half of my home was built in 1917. I seriously doubt that I will either regret, nor devalue it by remodelling the back half of my home that was built in 1954 to more closely match the early portion of the house.
I think 10 years from now, a nicely done backdate on a 3.2l Carrera will be a car that is within 5-10% in value of an equal condition standard as delivered 3.2l Carrera. And if one backdates something like a '77 911, they may even add value to the car.

Mine, pre-backdate. It was about as nice as the come, that's the original paint.
I like it LOTS better now and that's all that matters to me.

I always liked that car. Sorry I didn't buy it when it was for sale, but you did a really great job on it. It is hard to argue with the results.

Thanks, Daniel...I came very close to selling it recently but two serious potential buyers backed away because the A/C was deleted, another because it didn't have a black interior and another because he had to sell his car first. While not an impatient person, when I'm in a buying or selling mode, I do it pretty swiftly or not at all.
Also recently I came sooooo close to trading it (plus a fairly substantial amount of cash) for a really nice 997 GT3 owned by a long-time Porsche friend but that deal unfortunately didn't end out working out to our mutual satisfaction. The blue car will stay in the garage for the time being and that is fine with me.
