Default Odd hot start issues 81 911SC

This car starts first time of the day I swear with only half a revolution, always amazes me!

About 5 years ago, it would be intermittently hard to start once warmed up, maybe every 20 times. It always started eventually.

This summer, once driven for 15 minutes or so and then parked, it does not want to start. I started using a stopwatch, and it will ALWAYS start after 20 seconds of cranking. I usually turn the key on for 10 seconds or so prior to cranking, but it does not seem to matter. It is almost always exactly 20 seconds!

I don't know that it is a temp problem, it will start immediately when it is warm after a quick trip into the convenience store. It waits the 20 seconds everytime after sitting for 1-4 hours though.

I have tried pumping gas pedal, holding it wide open, still takes about 20 seconds.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Doesnt sound odd to me. Sounds like the fjel accumulator or fuel pump check valve. Im going with the accumulator coz it isnt cheap
The fuel accumulator sits right next to the fuel filter. If you pull the vqcuum hose off the bottom and any fuel comes out ,the diaphragm is shot and it is definitely bad. It depends on the fuel accumulator to keep up fuel pressure so a warm engine can start when you dont have cold start assist

Welcome to rennlist and pics please

Don't pump the gas pedal!!!

Don't push on the pedal; ever! Bad habit to have.

Don't leave the ignition on; the fuel pump doesn't operate until the engine cranks.

I agree that the fuel accumulator is probably bad (95% chance). It's the device next to the fuel filter, and it's kind of an army green color. Your local P-car dealer should be able to get one for you, or you might want to check with redlinetechnik in Long Beach CA. Marc @ 562-901-2900.

The most reasonable I could find was AutohausAZ.com for ~$160 shipped, at least $80 cheaper than anyone else.

Thanks for the help

Thanks Peter, no habit of pushing on the gas until after the engine starts, then it's a very hard habit to break!

I was just grasping at straws, tried holding it WOT, pumping etc, in the hopes it would help diagnose the problem.

This car normally starts so easily and quick it almost scares me!

Appreciate the help

Got the accumulator, got it installed, got no leaks!

When I undid the fitting on the bottom (vacuum?) gas poured out, a lot of gas actually, so I suspect that is confirmation that the old one was shot!

I will have to drive it and see if it actually solves the problem.
