Hello all,

I'm in the process of buying a 1983 911SC EuroSpec. The car is titled in Michigan, but I will be registering the car in Ohio. It has a clean CarFax report. Are there any pitfalls I should lookout for? I am having a PPI done on the car and have driven it my self. The car has 96K on it and drives and looks very good. I have attached a few pictures for reference. Looking forward to owning and driving this car and meeting other Porsche owners. I live outside of Columbus Ohio in Newark. Any and all feedback would be appreciated. Thanks Warren

Very nice looking ride. ...and welcome to Rennlist.

My '88 cab was originally from Upper Arlington, Ohio. Now she lives in Southern California.

For the PPI, ask the tech to remove the lower valve covers to inspect for broken head studs.

See the sticky at the top of the forum list posted by Peter Zimmerman regarding the PPI.

Good luck.

I just recieved the PPI from ArborMotion of Ann Arbor Michigan. He had two areas of concern. Let me start by saying that this car has spent a fair amount of its recent years sitting in a garage. 1) he told me that the engine was leaking oil from th base of the cylinders, but did not suspect broken studs because the engine runs smooth and performs well. He also said that it appeared that the engine was weeping oil from the seam where the crankcase splits. Note, the owner is running full synthetic oil... I was told that they could go through the engine for $10-15,000. I was stunned. 2) I was told that the transaxle has some leakage and that they detected some grinding between 2-3 shifts. I was told they could go through the transaxle for $7,000. I was stunned once again. He also told me that for the forseable future I could drive the car and live with the leaks: which I think I can. So the question is, do these numbers seem reasonable? At $15,000 is the car still worth buying? I'm contacting the owner tonight to go over the PPI with him. He is motivated to sell. Any thoughts or advise? Warren

Synthetic oil will leak through places conventional oil won't.....and leaks in a 911 is just part of the deal. Not a big deal for the case to leak, but the heads makes me think it's the return tubes not actually the heads.

The tranny would be a 915 and something I know nothing about.

Best of luck....

Worn shifter bushings and old gearbox fluid can cause shifting issues.

Are you able to get photos of the bottom of the motor?

Thanks for that info. The PPI stated that the shifter needed bushings, etc and the gearbox hasn't been changed for a long time. First thing I'll do is to change all fluids and filters. A friend of mine recommended using Brad Penn 20W50 in it. As a result of the PPI, the seller and I agreed on a revised selling price of $14,250 so I think I'm getting a fair deal. I'll try to get some pictures of the bottom when I can get it up on a lift or stands. Warren

That seems like a fair price.

How is the sheet metal near the battery?

I looked at it with the battery in place , it looked solid. When I get it home, I'll pull the battery for a closer inspection. The shop that did the PPI said the pan in general looked good.

Beautiful looking car! I'm partial to the color!

Sounds like your estimates for engine & trans rebuilds are pretty accurate, although leaning towards the high side. It's very easy to put more into these cars than the purchase price.

Well you have all given me some encouraging info and I thank you. I'm picking the car up Sunday and driving back to Newark Ohio. I have already put a project list together on the Pelican site. ordered the Bentley service manual and the 101 projects book. Can't wait to become "one" with my new ride. If anyone is in the central Ohio area, pleae say "hey". Thanks again Warren
