Default My $6.99 auxiliary oil warning light

As shown in the first picture I can't see the oil warning light. There are kits to remedy this that put a big red light where the clock goes. Well, it's RS, but it ain't THAT RS.

I looked around and settled on a three pack of high intensity LED's from Pep Boys priced at $6.99. Then found some 3/4" x 3/4" angled aluminium and made a bracket about 2-1/2" long and cut an angle to match the curve of the column housing. I drilled three 1/8" holes and pushed the bulbs into place.

Then I made some jumpers with one male and one female spade on each and the LED's patched in. The shrink tubing held it all together nicely and made it look good if I do say so.

Then I cut a small section of the ring around the tach to feed the wire through. All that is left is to find some double sided foam tape to mount it next to the mirror switch and I'm done.

What do you think?

Ah HA! You thought I was being snarky....but for once, I was not.

I'm pondering how to rig a warning which could actually warn of impending doom, as opposed to a "zero psi" situation; perhaps a digital algo or something of the sort, which could determine symptoms of an impending system failure.

The thought here being fluctuations, a slow drop in pressure, a drop below a certain key number or any/all conditions which could be programmed in to a big red Bugs Bunny lamp such as yours.

Zero psi flasher would still be important, but anything which could perform the above would be key.

snarky. I painted it flat black if that helps.

There has to be something like that on the market.

I did a similar thing in my car - Red shows a non charging situation (which would mean a broken fan belt)

They are on the right - Just above the shift **** in this picture.

I have found that they catch my eye in that spot - just in my vision

doug a little too much time on your hands

why would you install a lanyard looking wire harness out in the open connected to a low oil pressure light when i for one have never heard of a low oil pressure issues with 3.0 or 3.2 engines??

i mean nice idea but is it really necessary? - why not find a way to hide the wires? seems nuts to have them hanging out in the open like that - guess you can hang your garage door opener on it...

I knew you'd break my ***** over this so I picked up more supplies and will be redoing and maybe even rerouting the wiring.

...and the lights were $7.99, not the $6.99 I was thinking.

....will be doing the same kind of contraption for the alternator/fan in yellow LED's. May groovzi have mercy on my soul.

i was going to ask if the lanyard was from daycamp 40 years ago.

don't get me wrong, i appreciate your ability to do this stuff but when you start cutting original instruments and drilling holes for something thats not really necessary, i start to worry about you.

maybe you can figure out a better IMS warning system for the guys over in the 996 forum

Who's cutting and drilling? I did not drill anything on the car. The gasket can be replaced for $12 and I made jumpers that did not alter the original equipment in any way. It would take less than one minute to return the car to factory spec. I did not cut the wires. Is that clear? I did not cut the factory wires. Believe me, I had you in mind from the inception of this project.

i must have misread - thought you cut the plastic instrument surround to accomodate the lanyard width.

guess i should put a lid on it

I cut the rubber gasket behind the bezel of the instrument to allow the wires to fit through the hole.

My next iteration will only have two small wires going through there. All the splicing will be done behind the LED lights. I do like the idea of not having the wire there, but could not see any obvious existing openings with a flashlight. I'll do more looking with all that time I have on my hands.

you still haven't answered my question of why you would install these warning lights when low oil pressure isn't an issue with these engines??

I thin I went over that in my first post. I can't see the light on the gauge with the new wheel from my driving position. ...and I think it is a good idea.
