I would like to buy an older targa

Ha! Exactly how I felt with my 997tt. Red, yellow, electric blue were all out because too flashy on a car worth over 100k-- I like to fly under the radar in a car like that (to both police and bystanders). In a classic car, red is nearly perfect! A old Porsche in Guards Red is exactly what I will be in the market for

Well, to each his own, but red is a no go with me. Silver or grey would be ideal, black or white would be fine if the car was otherwise a winner, and the more obscure colors I will evaluate as they come along, but no red.

That's one option, another is a more circuitous route, or abnormally frequent oil changes. You'll end up with a lot of condensation moisture in your oil with short trips like that.

Be aware (as I wasn't) that driver footwell space is less in the Targa than in the coupe. If you got big feets, then yous in trouble.
Also, the price of replacement tops is astronomical. I'm thinking of putting padlocks on mine.
And they won't let you run DE with the top off.

I drive my '87 targa daily which usually entails a 50-mile r/t ride (either by 55mph 2-lane backroads or 70mph limited access). Either way, even in hot weather, it takes at least 10-minutes to warm up the oil to operating temperature. There is the full measure of 14-qts of 20w50 that needs to go from ambient to 180*f before it's hot enough to trot.

No sports car has a huge footwell. Ever driven a Ferrari? My old Targa was pretty close to what I have in my 993 coupe, and a dead pedal did wonders-it does wonders for any 911 variant. I've got size 11's, so my feet aren't small.

The footwell in my RSX Type-S is twice the size of the Targas. I took off the driver's side footwell blower cover and that helped a little. Dead pedal is next.
And quit bragging about the size of your feet, Ed. According to women, it's hand size that's the true indicator.

Thanks for the help so far, it is appreciated. So, what does the rennlist community think of an extremely high-mileage car (200K) that has been completely overhauled within the last 10K miles? Better or worse than a completely original 100K car? My gut says the overhauled car is the way to go, but I would like to hear some opinions from people with more Porsche experience than myself.

Assuming the paperwork jives with the story, and I have no reason to believe it won't, how would you value the car? It appears to be in mint condition, and is being represented as such. But that is a lot of miles. I have someone who is going to check the car out this weekend to confirm the condition, but hypothetically, what is a perfect late 80's targa with 200k on theodometer worth.

I paid $10k for mine with 225k miles on it. Heck, so far the motor has been the best part of the car, and as far as I know it's never had any major work done on it.
