Post Too old to be a daily driver?

Hi All,

Just curious what your thoughts are on using older 911's as daily drivers. Im on my first Porshce, a '71 911T Targa...in excellent condition, excellently restored body and engine about 10 years ago. I bought it having way less knowledge than I do now with the intention of using it as a daily driver. I live in the country, I drive 100 miles round trip to work, 5 days a week, mostly highway driving. Its an awesome experience every day, I'd hate to not be doing it, but I'm wondering if it is wise given the age of the car, irregardless of how well it feels.

So should I be driving this car so much? Or should I be selling, shopping around for something a little more suitable to my situation? Id be interested in your opinion!

Thanks,

Jamie

Drive the sh$t out of it! Obvisouly you will have more frequent service expenses, but what a small price to pay for driving a Porsche everyday. Lower mileage usually brings better resale, but if you buy any car it will depreciate.

Have fun!

That wouldn't be my first choice for winter use for obvious reasons. The other thing you may encounter is more difficult availablity of some parts that will get worse as years go by. I would keep the Porsche, find something cheap and reliable and reasonably entertaining as a second/winter car. My choice is a 90 Jetta but Audi and BMW could pose some attractive possibilities. Non-turbo 944's could also work.

I drive my 912 with a '69 911E engine (soon to be 3.0SC) everyday for 9-10 monthes of the year, I don't drive it in the winter mainly because of the poor heating system but also because of snow. I've had less trouble with this car than any other I've owned, I dread the coming of winter

I say that as long as you regularly handle preventive maintenance you might as well enjoy it.

I feel your pain....

For me, putting 25k miles on my p-car going back and forth to work (my commute is 90+ round trip) is too much. Instead, I drive it once a week to work for fun and to keep it fresh and on weekends for fun and when I AutoX it.

I'd keep driving until an answer emerges.

The best thing you can do for a car is drive it. You gain intimate knowledge of the car and any impending problems. My daily is a '78 SC and it never lets me down, plus the car is all the better for the daily driving. Letting a car sit is never a good idea.

That said, you do have to counter this philosophy with the possibility that you will lose part or all of the car in an accident. Here you have to consider the value of the car and replacement costs and hassles. For my (very common) SC, no problem: they must have built more '78 Targas than any other car! For you, well, a longhood with no rust might give me pause...
