Post Keep 86 Coupe or move to newer?

I bought my '86 Coupe 2 years ago and I'm driving it a lot more than I thought on the weekends because I love it so much. It's got 112K miles with a rebuilt transmission original engine, great compression no oil consumption.

I'm not worrieed about the car keeping up but I am about trying to sell it with 160K in a few years.

I'm wondering if I should sell it now and get a newer 87 - 89 with lower mileage. Anyonwe have any opinions or in a similar situation? Anyone know of an original Calif. 87 - 89 3.2 Carrera Coupe with low mileage? I won't want to sell mine until I find a new one.

Thanks, Pete.

Yeah.....right......

Anyhow back to the question.

I have an 87 and I really like it but......get yourself a drive of a 993 and maybe (depending upon what you do in your car ) you may really like what is argueably the best of the oil cooled 911's.

Its not that great a leap into the 993 from the 87-89 series. Your car is not likely to depreciate too much so save a bit of cash would be my thought.

Cheers
Mark

Mike...tell us how you really feel. Thank you for your time on this board since you have no love for the the Porsche car that we are all dedicated to. I only wish I had the time to focus my dislikes and post comments to people who really had no intrest in what I had to say.

Ahem, back to the question at hand...

If you're concerned about high mileage and want to upgrade to something with lower mileage, you really have some choices in front of you. There are those that feel that the 87-89's are the last of the first series, and I think you'd find the prices reflect some premium for these models. With the G50 transmissions, they are nice. At not too much higher in cost are the 964's, which have some things to be aware of, however, they are not terminal to a thoroughly enjoyable Porsche. And as as Mark said, the 993's are probably the best of the air/oil cooled line.

If you know you want to stay in the <89 models, lower mileage is still better than higher mileage when selling. OTOH, if you really like what you have now, irregardless of mileage, just keep it and enjoy it. You may have to rebuild the engine at some point, and there's normal maintenance, however, the transmission has already been rebuilt, which is a plus.

Pete:

Regarding depreciation, you probably won't loose too much money on your '86 even if you put another 50,000 miles on it. Also, you know what you have and you know the condition of your car and that's worth a lot. With that fresh transmission rebuild, you could put 200,000 miles on your car without much major work.

If you buy a low mileage (50,000 miles for example), G50 3.2 for mid to upper $20k and then put 50-60,000 miles on it, you'd probably loose more money than by putting the same miles on your '86 (except your maintenance costs which you always tend to loose no matter what you're driving).

If you truely enjoy your car, I suggest keeping it and putting the miles on it. The '87-'89's do gain the G50 tranny, which is a very desireable transmission. But, performance wise, there is not much difference between the '84 - '86 cars and the '87 - '89 cars.

Good Luck,
Jay

I think SC and Carrera's are already fully depreciated. Since you know what you have with your car you might be ahead of the game if you factor in a cushion for potential repairs to the "new" car. If you want to upgrade to the G50, or just something newer it's a good idea. But, documented miles on a nice car arent that big a deal to the Porsche faithfull.

I actually like the fact that my SC has 140k. I dont mistreat it, but also think I use it more than I would a perfect low mileage example. Just drive it and have fun!

Was Mr. Hachey's first entry deleted or something?

The Z06 is a fine car. But I'm constantly amazed at how slow most of them go at track events I've attended. I don't think the problem is with the Corvette, really, but the type of guy who likes to buy them. You can't argue with the car's numbers. Maybe it's something else?

Recent time trial I participated in at Willow Springs:

Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Desalvo, Desalvo - Best time: 1:37.144
Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Robinson, Humke - Best time: 1:38.132
Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Straub, Tosi - Best time: 1:40.437

1973 Porsche 911, Olsen, Schmidt - Best time: 1:35.340

All on street tires. And Willow is a horsepower track, right?

yeah, I'm constantly amazed about the slowness of some of the owner's sensibilties, too. Pete starts a useful thread and... anyway...

We have a free country, it's had a tough year since the last 4th - there is a price to pay for freedom so this year I'll keep that sacrifice in mind. Godspeed.

Let's see... 112K, 17 years old, not a squeak or rattle, 1 qt. oil every 2,000 miles, 18 mpg in town, 25 on the road plus 0-60mph in under 6 sec. And that's just the rational end of the deal there's also the thrill to drive and great looks.

In 17 years that Z06 will be like a 17 year old C4 and that's along way from the car I described above.
