Question Tires for 1980 SC?

Hello,
LF: replacement tires for a 1980 SC (USA model)? Wheels?

Originals were Pirelli Cinturato P7 but not available according to the Pirelli website (only winter tires).

It's a staggered setup - 205/55/16 front, 225/50/16 rear.

Thx!

I'm running the same size tread on my '80 SC and I have used the Pirelli's P7s long ago but they were super soft and noisy, and after testing a few other brands, I've settled on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus the last few tire changes. The Michelins are sticky enough for my needs and they are relatively quiet and long-wearing.

I hope others will chime in as I'm sure there are a half-dozen or more potential good selections...

It's been a long time since I needed a pair of 225/50/16s, but if the Bridgestone S-02 are still made in that size, I'd consider them. Just make SURE they are the Z or VR rated "Pole Position" tires, not the lower quality, lower speed rated ones.

Hated the P7 when they were in vogue, and went with Yokohama A007s instead for more precise control in the curves. Have no idea what would be available today in a 205/55/16 and 225/50/16 tire.

The Tire Rack has 41 sets of tires available in the sizes and speed rating you need. There are more if you select the sizes you need without selecting a car first due to lower speed ratings being visible.

Call Damon at the Tire Rack if you want some solid advice for what works on a Porsche. He's been there over 10 years and has really helped me out over the years.

I've had great results with my Bridgestone RE760 Sports in those sizes (205 and 225) and the Bridgestone SO-2's are still being made.

I have the older model of the Bridgestone RE970AS on the same car in 15" sizes and those tires are exceptional for my uses.

You should have no problem finding a good set of rubber in the sizes you need since these sizes are common (yet).

Good Luck,

Jay

I have about six months on a set of Hankook Ventus V12 Evo's that I got from Tire Rack. I've been very pleased so far. Very well priced and with a $80 rebate.

IMO, a car like ours with 60's suspension technology, even as good as it was, will not benefit from top of the line tires unless modified or ran on a track. Any modern performance tire will be worlds better than what was available when our cars were new.
