I think I may just bring it to my transmission-shop-owning-911-enthusiast friend. This one seems to be a little over my head, and I've never done much work with transmissions in general. I will bring a report back about what the problem is!

i think if the outside all looks okay your looking at a busted fork or clutch.

Obviously you want to make sure the clutch cable etc is not causing the problem, but generally when the cable or clevis breaks, the pedal goes straight to the floor.

I would make SURE that whoever touches this job is experienced in the Porsche 911, not your average wrench.

IMO, the logical while you're in theres are to replace the oil pressure switch and o-ring, oil cooler o-rings, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and engine seal at the flywheel. Make sure you use new flywheel bolts. The reason is that the oil seal or pilot bearing usually fails before the clutch disc, causing them to go bad. Other than that, just clean up everything, make sure to use the special high temp grease on the transmission input shaft spines, and clean and grease the throwout fork shaft.

Yeah, the transmission shop thats doing it is very very well qualified and well versed in 911's. The local Porsche/Ferrari shop is next door too... She will be in good hands

This is quite the unfortunate setback considering I've only driven the car a total of 3 times around the block. Anyone know of any good deals on clutches? Racing clutch and flywheel while I'm in there?

Never mind, he already got the parts, haha. I sure hope there aren't any other problems tranny wise. Thanks for all your help so far, guys!

If he ends up replacing the flywheel, then advise him to check that the bolt for the ref sensor is ferrous and not stainless steel.

Just got the car back from the shop, and Ed was right - it cost exactly $2037.37 including tax to do the clutch, which is what the problem was. The clutch actually completely blew out, like you see with drag racing clutches. Turns out, the flywheel was pretty beat, so that probably was a big help to blowing it out. Looks like the car could still use a clutch cable, so I will do that too within the next couple days. I've just got to go easy on the pedal for now.

to everyone Thanks for all the help with this "little" surprise!

I have to know. This was a heavy duty clutch, and not the rubber centered clutch? Has anyone else heard of this happening?

I honestly have no idea. I can see if my friend still has the old one. This actually happened to my uncle before, but it was in a Jetta I think. Same problem though - just shifting from 3rd to 4th, not bashing on it what so ever. He thought it was the master cylinder, and when that did work he did the clutch and it came out the same way.
