When I bought the car, it came w/ the Prototipo installed and the orig wheel was given to me as well. One of the first things I did, was replace it w/ the original, because I wanted the interior all "Porsche". Now after a year of ownership, I am getting the urge to reinstall it. It does look sweet as hell and curious of the attitude towards it on the boards. Here are a few before and after pics.

 

Go with what you like best, that is what counts. I like the original wheel better.

I almost went with a Prototipo… actually bought one, but then re-sold it instead. It will sit a little closer to the dashboard (unless you find a spacer) and it is slightly smaller in diameter, but the effect is pronounced as the stock wheel (well, at least the Carrera 4-spoke) is offset upwards. What this means is that instrument visibility is noticeably better with the stock wheel, whilst still having leg clearance for normal driving (of course, when you apply a lot of steering input, then the offset will impinge upon your thigh clearance).

In my case I wanted MORE thigh clearance as I am quite tall. For me, I chose to go with a Momo MOD 08 which has a lot of dish, which moves the wheel both back and up and gained me much more clearance than I had with either the stock wheel or the Prototipo. Of course, there are various ways to get the clearance (spacers etc.). But what I am trying to say, comfort and fit are the biggest factors. Since you have the Prototipo on hand, there is nothing stopping you from trying it. But try to ignore the looks issue and evaluate how it is changing the feel of the driving experience, and let that be your guide.

I have a Prototipo on my SC and a 930S wheel on my turbo. The Prototipo is nice, but I prefer a fatter wheel like the 930S. What is really nice is a Special wishes steering wheel.

 

The Prototipo is a genuine racing wheel from the late sixties and early seventies, and can be seen in pictures of many racing Porsches, including 908s and 917s. Because of this, it is a popular replacement wheel for many 911 owners. I had a genuine early prototipo in a Fiat I once owned, and I was truly sorry I did not remove it before selling the car, when I saw years later how the new owner had abused it.

 

I had the 930S wheel, which is my favorite, but that is not to say the Prototipo is bad.

 

I think I will slap it back on! The Steve McQueen 911 that sold for a record, had one on it as well!

 

I think in a "modern" (78-89) non-modded interior, the Prototipo looks a little out of sync, but that is only my opinion.

Now, throw in some racing shells, RS panels and some perlon carpet, and it starts to look more at home.

 

I think the Monte Carlo was the Momo of choice in the mid 80s.
