DME Relay/ Fuel Pump Relay
Hello all,
I’m a first time Porsche owner and had a couple of questions about the relays. (1984 911) I’ve been reading these forums for a couple of days now and have noticed quite a few post about the DME and fuel pump relays. So I wanted to go ahead and pre purchase these.
1. Where is a good place to buy these items? I was thinking Pelican
2. I see with the relays there are a couple of different brands. Does it matter which one? Should I always buy OEM?
3. Any other suggestions on spare parts I should stock would be greatly appreciated
Thanks, Jeremy

I say the OEM relays are better than the cheap ones.....(M.O.)
1.) I stay with pelican for "almost" everything since the NG has been so helpful....time to pay it back.
2.) I stay with OEM (M.O.)
3.) "spare parts": belts, fuses, bulbs, fire extinguisher.
Tools, niceties,..extras are another matter (discussion).
Warm welcomes here. I love that frikin' color...

Jeremy,
Pelican would be the first choice as everybody should carry spare relays in their glove box.If you do purchase one from Pelican, swap it out with your known good one and try it ... Pelican has been known to supply faulty units on occasion !
Cheers !

Welcome to Rennlist.
You have no idea how grateful I am to my fellow rennlisters for suggesting the spare relay.
Seems like it was just days ago...... Oh wait, it was.

FYI, the DME relay and Fuel Pump Relay are one and the same. The fuel pump won't work without the DME relay. It triggers the fuel pump as you crank the engine.

Are they the same thing? Pelican shows a separate relay for the fuel pump? It looks like it plugs into the front fuse box. Or is it some sort of fuse that Pelican calls a relay?
Thanks everyone for your help looks like I’ll be placing an order with Pelican this week..

I shouldn't talk from memory. I know that the fuel pump is fused, and that the SC has a fuel pump relay. Not sure that the 3.2 has a fuel pump relay, separate from the DME relay.

I don't believe it does, Rusnak,..as the DME relay carries sets of contacts,....one of which is for the fuel pump (at least on my Carrera) and the other is for the DME itself.
I think it was pre-DME cars that used the round fuel pump relay (correct me if I'm wrong).

Yep, the DME relay contains the fuel pump relay in Motronic cars ('84 on).
This confused the heck out of me when I first got my car too!

Again I would like to thank everyone for your generous help this is one of the better forums I’ve every belonged to. I only hope that someday I will be able to repay some of this wisdom. I’m learning something new every day.
My confusion about this has come from the Pelican website when I did a search for the DME relay they suggested other parts I may need and the Fuel Pump relay was one of them. I’ve opened up my fuse box and it seems to have this same red round relay that is shown on Pelican. Could it be a fuse for the fuel pump? That's really fricked up that they show a red round relay for cars through '89, as this is NOT the case....very misleading and confusing to many..someone should report this anomoly to Wayne so that it can be fixed.
No, the relay is not a "fuse".
Be sure to have, in your employ, the Bentley, at minimum,..and preferably the Porsche manual on your year,..can be had on CD on FleaBay....real deal, too.

hmm....no, the red relay is a higher amperage relay, and is used on the AC (air conditioning) system on the 3.2 911. You can use a red relay in place of a black one (emergency only) but you should not use a black one to replace a red one unless you're doing so in a pinch.

I thought the difference between the round relays (red/black) was simply diode related. I've not heard of a difference in amperage rating...
In any case, my comment had to do with PP showing a round, red relay for the fuel pump for a 1989...and this is not the case. PP DOES show a proper part number (and relay) for the DME, as well.
I agree that a red relay is used , in my car, for AC purposes.
Thanks for that current rating info, Rusnak. I did not know that.

Doyle
