Default 1968 911S Targa value???

I have found a 1968 911S Soft Window Targa. It's serial numbers confirm that it's a real "S". It's been stored for most of the last 25 years, during which the owner has probably added about 5K to the total of 44K on the clock. It runs and sounds decent.

Interior
* Very rough
* Dash needs replacing
* Needs new carpets
* Needs all new rubber seals
* Needs new steering wheel
* Needs new removable top and vinyl rear windows
* Needs both door panels
* Needs seats, front an rear

Exterior
* Appears rust free except for
* one inch dia spot at bottom of passenger door
* Rust about 1" wide by 12 inches long on passenger side floor pan
* no other signs of even minor rust
* Cheap repaint about 10 years old with latches etc painted over
* Slight crease on top of right headlight
* Front bumper does not attract magnet???

Power train
* Engine runs
* Clutch cable broken and therefore I have not been able to drive

Note: This is a German (ROW) 911S Targa. Not sure how it got here and I'm concerned about how that fact affects the value of the car. I'm assuming it therefore has none of the US 1968 air pollution equipment.

I'm looking for a keeper to restore to top notch condition, but not a show car. I want to drive it on sunny summer days. Also, I'm not looking at it as an "money making" investment. In the long run I hope I would ultimately be able to get most of my money out of the project. Therefore my question is, what is the right price to buy this. I think I can get it for about $15K to $20K.

Thanks
Larry

The soft window SWB S's are some of the most sought after early 911, so properly restored the car the car is worth 120-140K maybe more, that's the good news. The bad news is will cost almost that much to get car back to where is needs to be. Car will most likely need some significant rust repair, it its just the pan no big deal. These cars can rust in some weird places and you need to know where to look. The 68's are some what more difficult to restore since a lot of interior parts are one year only. There were quite a few of these brought over to US over the years, so that should not be of concern as long a car has a title and has been registered. For 15-20k I would there right now with my checkbook.

Larry,
Nice find! That isn't a bad buying price, but be ready to spend $100K to restore it. If there is a little rust, there is more that you didn't find. If you don't pull the trigger, I know someone who will. Also, just the seat covers alone should make you want to buy it! I would love to hear how you found it.

That car looks like its in great shape, 15K is a decent price as stated above these cars are sought after and getting harder to find. The dash actually does not look horrible from the pictures it may just need a good cleaning. The engine looks like its all there and in good order. The clutch cable is not a big deal. You mentioned some thing about the smog equipment not being there as it is a ROW, that is only an issue depending on where you live. I know in NY where all my cars reside a car of this year does not need to pass any emissions tests so that would not be an issue. Just ask your mechanic if a car of that year will have to pass emissions.

Regards
Dave

I just hope you have bought it by now!!

As complete as it looks in the photos you may not run as high as $100k. Rust can be dealt with, paint, interior as well. Finding those one year only parts very hard and $$$, but you seem to have most of those.
