Default Had been planning to buy a low mileage 997, but . . .

. . . after seeing a 1982 911SC I find myself leaning towards the '82. The car wouldn't be a DD, but it won't be a garage queen either as I see no point in buying a car you rarely drive. My question is can you really depend on a car that is 30 years old to drive 100 days a year and to make 200 mile interstate road trips in the summer and fall? I understand that you need to start with a solid car and maintain her, but am I kidding myself that I could do this without going broke on repairs? Thoughts?

if it is already in good shape i would dare say it is way cheaper to maintain than tripping your water cooled 911 to the dealer once a year for a "check"

Yes, you can if you find a good car have any defered maintenance taken care of, keep up the maintenance, and do a through inspection before any trips. Have a kit of spares for road trips based on the car you have. ...and the back roads are so much more fun than the interstates!!

I do at least two trips a year one in the 4-5 thousand mile range and another in the 750-1200 mile range. And mine is a 43 year old '69E.

So find one you like and get to know the back roads of America in it. Remember - a mile not driven in your Porsche is a mile lost forever.

Aside from reliablility issues, be aware that the driving experience of an SC versus a 997 is very different. You should spend some time behind the wheel of each to make a good decision.
