Peter Zimmermann's book is excellent.

When you return, send me a PM. I'm just outside of Fayetteville. There aren't many of these around here so it would be nice to see another one in the neighborhood:

Oh most definitely my friend. That is a beauty. I might have to get a red one so I don't cramp on your style.

USAF.

I think you'll like both of those books.

So I read "The Gold-Plated Porsche." Good book, and even the stuff that wasn't about the Porsche overhaul was pretty good. Also picked up the Zimmerman book and read the whole beginning, and then everything from the SC's - Carreras up to '89. Pretty much decided that I want an 87-89 carrera 3.2 because of the G50 and smooth shifting, clutch life, synchro non-issues, and the look is beautiful. Ughhh I can't wait to get out of this country and start shopping for one in person. But I must be patient.

There you go. One more fallen prey to the G-50 trap. Just kidding. Have you driven a 915 gearbox ? No offense G-50 is a great gearbox but please buy a car of this age for its mechanical condition and not for it's technical specification.

So what do I owe you guys for getting me the 915 discount ... A ride on the 997.2 GT RS ... Or does it also fall under the category of an appliance.

I'm confused. So.. the g50 isn't better than the 915? And no I haven't had the chance to drive a car with either gearbox. And I will judge a car based on mechanical condition, but if the is a better choice then I would look specifically in those model years.

For one I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or if you actually thought that about the G50's. This is my first time looking into buyin a 911 so sorry if I'm not a seasoned vet.

Yes, I am being sarchastic, and this advice is given regularly here. You DO need to try different cars/years.

Yes, one can argue the G50's were an improvement. But, not that much so, and not worth absolute focus on. I can take that a step further and say the G50's in the 993 are better yet as they also have 6 gears. And the motors have hydraulic cam followers needing no valve adjustment. Heck, a lot of things improve over the years at Porsche, but one doesn't necessarily want a brand new one, or that older 911's are bad.

The G50's are not infallible, clutches still wear (and are more complicated), and the 915 shifts fine when the bushings don't need replacement or the couple needing adjustment.

You should pick the series of car you want, in this case Carrera, and go for the best CAR you can find, and not limit yourself to a small subset based on a transmission.

To the OP. Ed has owned both a 915 ('84 coupe) and a G-50 (his current 993). So his advice is as good as it gets. This thread may of be some value to you:
