west coast P-car owners - how many times have you driven north or south or RT?
one of my favorite things to do is to take a round trip drive from seattle to california OR buy a car and drive it home. nothing like getting away from the wife and kids for a few days and taking some time for myself.
thought it would be interesting to see who else likes to do this and when/why you did it.
i'll go 1st:
1989 arizona-seattle: purchased 1966 911 drove home
1991 LA-seattle: purchased 911sc drove home
1995 SF-seattle: drove my restored 59 super sunroof home
1996 sea-LA-sea: drove to LA swap meet in 911sc
1997 sea-LA-sea: " " "
1998 SF-seattle: purchase another '59 356 drove home
1999 sea-SF-sea: porsche ferry b'day drive to SF and back in my '59 356
2001 sea-LA-sea: drove my 59 356 to LA and back with friend who has '57 356
2004 SF-seattle: purchased my '96 993C4 drove home
2005 SF-seattle: drove my '79 ferrari 308 home
2007 SF-seattle: purchased my '95 993 C2 drove home
2008 santa cruz-seattle: purchased 2000 boxster drove home
2009 LA-seattle: purchased my '90 964 drove home

Mine are mostly Manhattan Beach to San Fran & back & usually Hwy 1 or at least 101. Don't have the time to recall & write them all but here are some.
5/91 Family reunion in Fresno rented compact car headed to HWY1 & South
10/93 Working for Saleen, car finished at 11pm, had to deliver to Fremont Ford
for customer in Bay area at 8am collect check & deposit to make payroll. Mission accomplished make beeline for Hwy1. Driving Ford dually towing car trailer thru Big Sur trying to stay awake, finally stoped at motel at noon.
6/94 Still working @ Saleen bought 94 Mustang conv. for conversion. Road Trip to San Fran & back.
9/11/2001 Working a new car press event in ParkCity Utah when the TwinTower came down. No flights available, 2 dudes & 1 rental OldsmoBuick, he lives in SF so we drive past Salt Flats spend the night in Reno. He drops me in Mendocino Co to pickup Jag X-type to deliver to MotorTrend in LA for Car-of-the Year competition. MotorTrend journalist manages to total Jag by hitting a wall despite stability control & AWD.
10/01 Managing PCNA press fleet now, deliver 996 cab to Excellance Mag in Bay area swap for the only GT2 in the country return to LA on 101 was IMPRESSIVE!!

Wife & I flew down to San Francisco & drove my '89 targa back to Eastern Oregon in June of 2007.

Decided to make a trip out of it, and also got to visit Alcatraz, which was very cool.
Cheers,
Paul.

I've done some long 928 pickups. The best was 1100 miles in one day, all at 80+.
My others were local purchases. But, it was raining when I picked up the 993.

Race Car
The 101 is crowded. The 5 is boring. You owe it to yourself to drive up the east side of the state on the 395. Years ago, I took it to Reno Fernley for my first-ever race. I think you are up over 7000 feet at three points on the drive. You get to pass Mt Whitney. If you're a fan of old movies you won't be able to avoid thinking of High Sierra.
Here's Donner Pass, coming back the long way toward San Francisco.
Then again, there's the Jack Ranch Cafe where James Dean died if you take the cut between the 5 and the 101 a little early.
But I'll admit: I've never been north of Sears Point.

^ Yep. That last pic is Cholame.
I pass by it about once per month on my way to Morro Bay. I always turn off and back on my headlights when I pass the intersection of 41/46, which is where he died, about 3/4 mile away.
One of my favorite things is to take weekend trips within a drive.
Old Town Sac is a favorite, as well as Mono Lake. I want to take a trip to Bodie, the ghost town near Mono Lake later this year. Or lunch at the Ahwahnee in a month or so.

Coming back from Monterey car week last year in the 993, my buddy (Cayman) and I stopped at the JD intersection for pics by the memorial sign.

Drove my quite modified SC all up and down the West Coast and to AZ in '93 and '94 when I was post law school, still making my bucks doing 911 engines and tranxaxles though, and was getting back into track events. Funnyism was that with a 7/31 ring-and-pinion my car was too modified to avoid the local PCA rollbar required rule as that was deemed not reversible, yet the accomodation to a bodyshop owner to allow fender flares that allowed the use of cantilever slicks meant he could run without a rollbar. So I just packed my bags, and ran Seattle, Portland, Willow Springs, and my old stomping grounds of PIR and Firebird.
Oh, and next week I'll be hitching my truck to pick up another 911 and trailer. Getting it on track a week later at AMP (sans loud exhaust) while we're vacationing in the Phoenix area.

Three Wheelin'
I drove from Santa Barbara to Portland a few years back in my 951, on the coast for as long as possible (all highway 1 till I had to cut inland for Portland), and since I had only a few days off work, I only stopped for lunch and bathroom breaks. It took about 21 hours, and was the best drive I have been on to date. The drive back along I-5 was way quicker but boring except for the first few hours in Oregon and near Mt Shasta.
