Default Dipstick?

Are there dif length dipsticks available for diff models?
I note that the only time I get a 'puff' of smoke on first start of the day is after I've 'topped off' to 1/2 full (halfway between the two marks).
The oil gauge (when prop hot and at idle) always indicates this as 3/4 full even tho the stick shows 1/2?
Wondering if the gauge is off a tad or the stick belongs to another car and not my '83 SC.

I found this info...does this sound correct? I have the 930.107.731.01 presently and have no idea if the sender has been replaced.
The correct (original) dipstick for a 1980 is part no. 930.107.731.00

I believe if you replace your oil tank sender than you need to change the dipstick to part no. 930.107.731.01 , the lengths are the same but the min-max markings are slightly different.

On 930.107.931.00 the min mark is approximately 27mm from the bottom of the stick.

On 930.107.731.01 the min mark is approximately 21mm from the bottom of the stick.

The max reading on the replacement stick is slightly lower as well.

I don't know of any variations in the dipsticks, AFAIK all the oil tanks are the same capacity and shape, so all the dipsticks should be the same.
I would trust the stick.

Your dipstick is fine. When you only fill the oil to the mid-level of the stick, you are in-fact only filling it 3/4 full on the guage. If you fill it up to the full mark, your guage needle will read all the way to the top. In some cases, if the guage is off a little (like mine), my guage reads almost to the top when it is at the mid point on the dipstick. These guages aren't fool-proof, so just keep an eye on it and only trust the dipstick. I could probably get it calibrated, but I'm used to it now after 13 years.

Good Luck

The dipstick in my '82 is a "731 01," and the min mark is 23mm from the tip of the stick. My gauge accurately reflects what appears on the stick (i.e., halfway between min and max on the stick reads half on the gauge), but I only use the gauge for casual reference, never as the true oil level.

Thanks, just wondered. I'd never trust the gauge exclusively but once you figure out its abnormalities it is a pretty good indicator when sitting still for a bit.

I have both dip sticks. The one in my filler cap was the one that says min and max on it, while replacing my oil level sender gasket I found a dip stick warped around it. It was the original one with the 2 dots on the locations. The interesting thing is that the locations dont line up. They are close but not the same. The double dot style locations are a bit lower. In the end of the day I dont think it will make a difference which stick you use.

Regards
Dave

I always thought that there certainly were various dipsticks related to specific years.....(different part numbers, that is).......and that they were, in fact, not the same.

Quick story. At one point during a time when I had a heavy commute, about 40 miles each way x 5 or 6 days a week, I drove a '77 911S for more than a year. The engine oil cooler developed a pin hole leak (without me knowing it), and the leak only occurred while driving. The oil missed the heat exchanger below it and went straight to the ground below. One morning I was on my way to work and saw the oil pressure gauge needle flicker. I thought, that's weird. I was at a stoplight about 20 miles into the drive, and saw that the oil level gauge sat at about a quarter, but out of the red.

Instincts took over, and I stopped at a nearby gas station, pulled the dipstick, and it was dry. Whoa! I added a quart, still dry. I added another, still dry. Seven quarts later the level was halfway between min and max on the stick. I glanced at the level gauge - it hadn't moved! I looked under the car, and saw a small puddle of oil below the cooler.

The damn level gauge had died, and then the cooler started to leak. Wow. One, maybe two, more quarts low, it would have cost me an engine. I know that this was probably a one in a million deal, but it happened, and I've never trusted an oil level gauge since!

Don't be a dipstick, use those dipsticks!

Agree, most car nuts are pretty **** about oil levels. I check all of our cars new/old every few days out of habit.
I check the Porsche all of the time because of the mileage/oil consumption for a good record.....see how far this unopened booger will go prior to getting a rebuild.

the top one. 930.107.731.00 really had a much higher top up level...subtracting the lower dif looks to be about 3/4 quart more oil.
Did the tank ever change size?

The front cooler, and the case did change. Possibly the different dipstick levels account for those?

Well the earlier dipstick shows the higher level of tank oil before the front cooler changes took place.
OTOH I have no idea what sysytem held more, the trombone or later Carrera radiator.
Might of been Porsches way of helping us from overfilling the tank. Pretty common occurance from what I can see.

That's the story I've been told - too many customers back in the day overfilling the tank so Porsche finally made a small change to the stick.
