Exclamation What color was first Porsche?

This (911 Forum) is one of the most populated and busy forums on the Rennlist. I know there are many Porsche experts here. This post is to give a heads-up towards my primary post under General Topics-"...356.0001...".

So far the contibutions have been lean. Some are extremely helpful. Input from the 356 Forum contributors have been near zero.

If you can help -great!

I'm pretty sure it was silver.

I am almost positive it was silver, or aluminum as richglicckel pointed out. I'm pretty sure I took a picture of it at the Monterey Historics when Porsche was the featured marque, I will try to dig it up for you.

As with all German racing cars of the era, Dr. Porsche painted his car Pewter silver. The most recent restoration has the car aluminium silver. The Gmund coupes of the day with their front wheel spats that ran at Leman stayed mainly with the pewter color,as witnessed in person at Porsches 50th @ Watkins Glen N.Y. Cheers Mike.

The first Porsche, 356 roadster # 356/01, was built in 1948. Fashioned out of aluminum the car was a mid (not rear) engined design. It had trunks aft and rear (sound familiar 986 guys?).

Only one example of this car was ever built and it was shown publically for the first time at the Swiss Grand Prix on July 4, 1948. No. 01 was sold to R. von Sengen in September 1948. Von Sengen had Porsche build a special trailer for the car.

The car was sold back to the the Porsche factory in 1953.

The car was much heralded in 1998 as Porsche celebrated its (and the 01's) 50th birthday. There was a detailed article in Panorama magazine (and other mags as well) that year, and there is the now famous photograph of Ferry Porsche at the wheel of 01 taken months before his death, looking back over his shoulder into the camera as if appearing to be be preparing to drive the car straight to the gates of Heaven.

Since the early photos are black & white it's hard to tell exactly what "shade" of silver the car was painted. But, the more recent photos show the paint color as a light, almost mercurial (rather than a darker, viz., pewter) silver.

The car never did make it to the big 50th anniversary bash at Pebble Beach in '98. It got dropped on its nose while unloading here and was promptly shipped back to the factory museum for repair. <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

"The official "date of birth" for the first Porsche is considered being June 8, 1948. Number one, a two-seat 356 with a 1.1 litre centre engine, 40 HP weighing 650 kg."

For those of you who did not get it the first time. The opening post is just a heads-up to get you to participate/read the actual post-thread in another forum area of the Rennlist web forums. Go to the "General Discussion Area". Look in "General Porsche Discussion Forum". Find topic "356.001 What was color of first Porsche".

IT WAS NOT SILVER! If you saw 356.001 at Montery Historical Races you need to surrender your drivers license, because you are seeing things that do not exist.

The history as to the availablity of paints and materials in post-war europe is interesting and, no doubt accurate. The early black & white photos depict an almost flat finish, like a dove gray or, perhaps, butternut, as you suggest.

But, if Dr. Porsche, (you know the guy who built the car in the first place), liked "no.1" in its later (restored) silver finish, that's good enough for me.

Ciao!
