Hello,
The alternator (and the separate regulator) of my '72 2.4s are out.
I can' t find any rebuilt or new part. It seems that there is a shortage.
Could anyone please tell me whether it is possible to simply (I am not a mechanic) upgrade the alternator?
Thanks.
The ref. of the alternator is 901.603.120.00 (SEV Motorola 71 22 37 02) and the regulator was part number 901.603.206.11.

Nanard,
The 901.603.120.00 alternator was replaced by 911.603.120.X. The 901.603.206.11 regulator is superceded by 911.603.901.00. The alternator is the 770W unit. The next bump came in 1975 to 980W units. Someone else will need to confirm if the swap is possible. Alternator is 911.603.120.04, and requires 911.641.981.00 resistor and 111.971.511 junction box. Shortly after that the alternators through 1982 are superceded to the 1982 Valeo alternator with integral regulator. There is a dealer bulletin (Technical Bulletin 1) in the Porsche Parts and Technical Reference Catalog ('74-'89 911's) that describes the upgrade.

I believe that the upgrade from 770 to 980 watts necessitates a change in the fan housing, or machining the existing housing in order to seat the alternator more deeply.
Alternatively, you might be able to get the parts for your 770 watt unit from an auto electric shop or a Volvo dealer. The Motorola units were very popular, years ago. Five or six years ago, I bought replacement parts for my 770 watt unit from a Volvo dealer. The internals interchange with the Volvo 164 of the early 70's. The problem is that the slip ring on your rotor may be too badly worn to be worth the trouble. I don't think that a new rotor was available when I looked.

hello Nanard, I have never liked the SEV units. When it was time to replace mine, I got a whole new replacement unit. This one is based around new Bosch components. I know from the fact sheet, that they list the application of the alternator by the fan ring as there are diffrent depths in the fan rings.
You can see them here. <a href="http://www.aasessales.com" target="_blank">www.aasessales.com</a>
Mine dropped straight in and came with instructions too.
Hope this helps
