Opinion on this 1987 911
Hey guys I'm looking for a 911 and was wondering what your opinion is on this car. I'm looking for an 87-89 for the G50. The only thing this 911 doesnt have is the whale tail, but from what I have read on this forum the whale tail isn't hard to add on. What do you think of this car and is anyone familiar with it? Thanks very much for your opinions!

I would wonder where the factory steering wheel is and why the red seat piping?? What does " Porsche tech owned" mean?
$20-$22k at the most if it checks out and has impecable service records from birth. The more stock a car is, the more it's gonna be worth. At his point, do you have the same taste as the previous owner?

My advice would be to steer clear of Porsches for sale on Ebay ... if you're patient the right car for you will come along with all the original parts,a good background from someone who's owned it for many years and has been active in some sort of Porsche related area ... PCA/Rennlist/Pelican
The price is rather high for an 87 with some original parts either transformed or down right missing !
Just sayin ...
Cheers !

Phil is right. A super clean 911 jumps out from the rest. PCA cars are a great place to find a beautiful. The only problem is the PCA owners with really clean classic 911's know enough not to ever sell them.

I agree with 911 Crazy. Its a little too expensive for what it is. The interior looks good though. I was looking out for a G-50 911 a year back, but then decided to stick with my car with the 915 transmission.

The rules of commerce are pretty simple here . The higher the price the longer he will have it .. As his price comes down the more interest. i think the piping could be original but the wheel i think not. You would be lead to believe it was well maintained because it was owned by a Porsche technician. My brother is a technician and his cars run like crap .. cant be bothered after working on them all day

Try driving one of each with the G50 and 915
Cars and Coffee at Brier Creek on the 1st Saturday morning of the month has a few air-cooled 911's in attendance.
I know the owner of a black 87 Targa in excellent condition selling it for $25K.

To expensive.... Move on, you will find that car for less than 20k
I went back and fourth between the 915 and G50 for some time while looking for my car. I ended up with a 78SC with a 915. This is what ill say on the matter. It depends what you are looking for in the car. I will admit the G50 is a bit easier to drive at first. It shifts extremely smooth and I found the clutch much easier to deal with. Im almost positive they have hydrolic clutches if I remember correctly. The 915 takes some getting used to. The 1st to 2nd shift needs to be fairly precise, and the clutch is nice and heavy. If you are going to be stuck in traffic in the car often, and dont have huge calf muscles you are in for a treat. I like the 915 because it requires a bit more attention than the G50 I find my self paying closer attention to my shifts and making them more deliberately with the 915. I have no regrets what so ever about not getting the G50 as that is what I was leaning to for a while. That being said by not limiting your self to the G50 you open up the options of the 84-86 Carrera if you want the 3.2 and the 78-83 SC if you are ok with the 3.0

To offer a counterpoint, I would say it all depends on what you want and how bad you want it. All of these cars are only worth what someone else will pay for them in the end. I just bought my dream car for around the same price as the one you are looking at. Mine is a 1987 Coupe. 104k miles, but engine rebuilt at 100k with 3.4l and a Steve Wong Chip, 930 Tie rods, two sets of wheels, 930 Steering wheel and the original, and racing seats plus the originals. I had a full PPI done and the car was perfect engine wise with only a few minor issues like the cruise control cable needing replacement. I pulled the trigger and love my car.

Here's an '87 for you to consider. I'm thinking about selling mine so I can purchase another '87 that a fellow-Rennlister is selling. Mine has 79k miles and just had a full top-end rebuild done. The car runs like a sewing machine and is in pristine condition. It doesn't leak a drop of oil and the engine still has a year warranty on the work. The only thing not working on the car is the a/c - which is very common. I'm going to ask $27,000 for it. If it sells great, if it doesn't, I sure don't mind keeping it. If you're interested, drop me a PM.
