Default Carrera projects completed, does this happen to you?

Well guys, after spending the last several months with my car's engine, transmission and various system scattered about, my 86 Carrera is all back together.

And I've been enjoying the result. Clean, tidy, fun, entertaining, gets tons of comments. The last thing I could even think to do to it was to put all new bushings in the transmission, which helped restore crispness and reduce shift effort.

But now, I find my self 'out' of things to do. I've conditioned myself to projects (and as I approach empty nest, I find this pattern repeating more often), so I've talked myself into selling the car to start another project.

The car will be on ebay tonight. (Scheduled for 7pm PDT)

When I look at the before and after, I get a sense of satisfaction. The car was a super good, well maintained car, but had some needs as do any 25 year old cars. It was fun to bring it back up.

Do you guys ever experience this 'post project boredom'?

I'll trade you a white '89 Targa for the coupe! It has a few things that need attention so it will keep you busy for a while.

You can "upgrade" to a G50

HA! It would about be worth it just to meet you!

I'm actually not even 100% sure what the project will be. Half way thinking about getting a lift, or a 993, or a seriously vintage car like an Etype.

Don't want to derail my own thread here, but I think I have 'project compulsion' or something. My wife accuses me of perfectionism and that may be related.

If I had good sense, I'd have them on my work computer! I did do a thread on 'my motor is out, now what?' below, with SOME of it.

I'll post the ebay link when it goes live tonight. Several pics there.

A quick before and after of engine - -

If I wasn't psycho, I should put "enjoy them to their fullest, expense and problem free" on the list! But this is a fun little car, no doubt. I'd drive it anywhere right now... half wishing a road trip would present itself.

The REAL pics are here and go 'live' on ebay at 5pm PST, 8pm EST.

You're heading to be featured on an episode of "Hoarders"!

As my last photo attests, I have a little problem with stuff that follows me home too.

I've done it a few times before. This is cut from another thread I did, but exact same process -

Pretty straight forward:

1. Simple green and brushes of diff sizes. Painters brushes work very well. Long handles help.
2. Wire brushes on uncoated metal.
3. Scotchbrite pads on uncoated metal to take out wire brush marks
4. If I could get to it (such as the fan) I'd follow with NevRDull wadding.
5. Cleaned up with many rags, and paper towels since they were thin enough to get in the hard to reach areas. Use the handle of the artist brushes with a paper towel around them to get the multiple nooks.

For the fan specifically -
1. Leave the belt on. It 'holds' the fan in place while you do the blades.
2. Do all the blades in turn with Scotchbrite.
3. Then use 00 Steel wool to smooth it out.
4. Then to NevRDull to lightly polish.

For the housing - -
1. Remove the belt. You need the fan to move.
2. Use Scotchbrite with two fingers on the pad, moving it inside the housing with the blade moving as you progress.
3. Follow with 00 Steel wool.
4. Then to NevRDull.

For both,
I used Duplicolor High Temp Semi Gloss Clear. I've had good success in the past with this on a variety of surfaces (not so good on magnesium). Will last far longer than leaving it unprotected. Hope this helps

What are you thinking of next? Another Porsche of some sort?

Your car is nice, and you might want to list it on Rennlist, Pelican, PCA and other classifieds. I know I am probabaly being biased here, but I always look at eBay cars with suspicion and I think that is where cars with "interesting" backstories tend to get sold. This might lead potential purchasers to approach the car differently than, say, if they were responding to a PCA ad. Just my $0.02.
