Post 911 oil

I'm about to change my oil and have a case of penzoil 20/50 lying around. Is this a good weight to use, my car is an 86' 911 with 31,000 miles pretty much weekend only summer use. Thx, Dan

Dan,

Questions like this usually receive about 100 responses.

Your choice of Penzoil 20W50 will be fine for warm weather use. You may want to use a lower weight oil in winter (10W30) especially if you live and drive in cold weather.

Cool

Whatever you use, make sure you go for a synthetic oil... especially in warmer weather.

Cool

carlos,

my mechanic swears by synthetic in his race car and newer porsches, however warns htat older porsches prone to leaks should not use synthetic oils because they can be thinner than normal oil and will find its way to the ground in places that conventional oils wont.....

i use castrol 20w50 in both my 83 911sc and my 87 924s. on occasion when 20w50 is not available here in hawaii i use sae 30 for the 924s.

I vote with BER above. I think the oil you have is fine. You can use what you already have while you wait for the other 90-some responses BER promised.

Go ahead and use the oil you've got. My feeling is, the worst motor oil today is probably better than the best motor oil available when your car was made. Pennzoil is far from the worst oil available and I'm sure it will work fine in your Porsche.

Trying hard to keep Ber´s 100 messages promise... here is another one...

Some years ago, I bought a V12 Jaguar XJS. I switched to Mobil 1, and within 10 minutes, oil was flowing from all seals and joints. I agree (know) that it can happen.

What I can also say, is that never before the V12 engine was as smooth as with Mobil 1, it really made a difference in "working smoothness" to switch to it. Since then, I believe in synth...
