Default OEM=16" wheels, any cons to running 15"?

So I found a wheel that I like but it's a 15" wheel and the stocks on my car are 16". Are there any negatives to running a smaller wheel/tire setup? It came off the same car I have so I know it'll fit. I've got a '78 911SC. Thanks for the help

what are your plans for the new wheels - street, track, touring, snowmobiling?

7&8X15s were standard on SC, the 16s were an option, so you will have no problem.. My 88 Carrera came with 7&8X15s and it does give you the option of a taller side wall (60 series came stock), for a softer ride (I know a few track guys who do this to make up for stiffer suspension), and you can go to a 50 series in the rear (25/50/15s) and it will be like changing to short gears, acceleration is quicker (we do this for Auto-Xing) so go for it..

This 15" setup will be just for street use driving.

Thanks Byron that clears things up.

I think I've heard it said that the OEM size 15 in tires are getting tougher to find. You might look into this first. I'm pretty sure the stock widths were 6" and 7" rather than 7" and 8". The stock 16 inch Fuchs were 6x16 and 7x16. The 15" wheels are going to be a little lighter, too, which can also be an advantage by reducing unsprung weight. For what it's worth, Peter Zimmerman praises the 15 in wheel and tire combo on these 911s in his book, but it is rare to see it on US cars.

It's the hot racing set up these days. Guys that went to17's and 18's have gone back they other way. In stock classes it's like a R&P change plus it lowers the center of gravity, less unsprung weight, and tires are substantially less expensive.

I presume you're talking about running a lower profile tire than OEM when you talk about equivalence to a ring and pinion change. Can you comment on availability of OEM sizes? On tirerack.com it looks like they only show a Pirelli P6000 at $200 and $250, front and rear. That doesn't seem cheap for OEM sizes.

So what year came with the 15x6 size all around? I see that size for sale as well as the staggered sizes.
