Question radar detector drained battery??

I went on vacation and came back to start my car and zippo. I have radar detector plugged into the cigarette lighter and this itty-bitty one inch wide display drained the battery. I've been pulling it out of lighter every night, but isn't there a way to not drain the battery? I now have my cell attached too.

In my '84 and '77 911's, the cigarette lighter is "dead" with the ignition off. Therefore, there would be no way to drain the battery if I left something plugged into the lighter recepticle.

Are you sure you have power to your cig lighter outlet when the ignition is off?
