I'm probably thinking of my old 993 on 1"=1Qt... I'll have to look at the Targa and see if my calibrated eye can discern the ratio.

Let's not start the great oil debate of 2011 all over again.

I will admit that at about 95mph I noticed a slight shimmy in the front end that did not feel like the tires were out of balance. This makes me think that the rubber in my NON-turbo tie-rods is not solid, but rather spongy.

They looked softer than I would have expected when I discovered the threads were frozen. I was gonna give it a slight tow in just because I was thinking they may have relaxed outward in the last 23 years. I was able to wiggle them with a wrench.

There may be some deflection at speed causing tow out to develop. May be overly paranoid, but it's definitively on the list.

I'm sure DOUG knows how to check his oil, he was just trying to equate what 1/2" in level on the stick equates to in volume. There is no calibration on the stick, simply a low and a high mark. On mine, about 1qt seperates the two, hence my thought that 1/2" is less.
Correct, but I recall the manual giving you an equation to utilize. I can't pull it, bacause I am not at the home the Targa is in.

It's about a qt between the marks, but the question was posed as volume for 1/2", which I doubt is defined in the manual.

"Did I tell you how much I love this car? This thing is awesome". We can all relate to that. Thank you for sharing your experience. I absolutely love venetian blue. On a sidenote, it was my impression that a writhing steering wheel is part of the car's character. It looks like I need to have my tires balanced.

Well, there can be several things going on with the front end.

bump steer is what it sounds like, hit a bump and the wheels change alignment. They do not remain parallel when one travels upwards or downwards in relation to the other.

Excessive negative camber causes uneven wear on the inward treads of the tires. This can lead to tires that are out of balance.

Excessive toe-in or toe-out can cause a feathering tread wear pattern that can also cause wheels to become out of balance.

Worn tie-rod ends can cause wheels to wander down the road independent of one another. (this is what I think may be going on with my car)

Loose wheel bearings can cause not only severe and erratic tread wear, but can cost you rotors and pads as well as lost bearings and races. (been there, done that )

Sure there is more, but this is what most of us face.

Do you have "Ruby's" manual handy? It's def more indepth than just what's between the marks.

Just checked the manual. I'll stand corrected in that it states 1.85 qts between the marks. That is all the reference to volume and gradiation on the stick. I could swear that mine goes from low mark to mid-ways between them with 1/2 a qt. I've maybe put a full qt in once from low, and got to the top mark, which I didn't like.

The distance between the marks is 2 3/8", so 1/2" on Doug's stick is a minor amount of oil, per the manual's specs.

+1, Ed.....straight up 1.85 qts,..forget linearity distractions....you used what you used,..eh?

Now,..what were his measurements, again (knowing the marker delta)>?

Amber never said "where" the oil level was originally,..just that they looked at it closely,...then denoted what was resultant after the trip...did I miss it?

Let's not get into the shape of the oil tank and it's impact on the numbers.

When we left it was about a half inch from the top and when we returned it was about an inch from the top; hence the 1/2inch number... ... ... More like 10mm, but I don't dare change my statement now.

How would ambient temperature before and after, effect all this?

Ambient would be negligible, bit engine temp would make a diff. Just minimal use.
