Default 1989,..rear shock and new sneakers

Of course, this is slated for tomorrow , early A.M...!!!

As you may have noticed in other threads, she has a broken sway bar mount that will be repaired soon with the WEVOs, both sides and fresh L/F'r droplinks,..a valve adjustment and fresh BP.

In trying to save money, I've opted to engage the rear shock changeout myself (instead of paying the wrench to do it),...will meet with the T/P wrench (Toyota/Porsche=son-in-law Master tech/Toyota) at this nicely cooled facilty (and 4 big-**** bays) tomorrow A.M. We're to load a fresh set of the new Bridgestone Potenzas/Pole Position, RE970AS on the rear then install fresh shocks on the rear. I'm gonna' stay with the Boge's for now and keep her stock....She's been running the RE960AS,..I got about 19Kmiles out of 'em.....there's tread but the broken sway bar mount has taken it's toll in wear on the rubber.....

She'll then head off to the shop for sway bar mount work and valve ajustments...Have spoken' with my wrench and all will be closely inspected in that valvetrain.....rockers, o-rings, cam-wear, feet, locknuts,..prepared!!!!!!!!

The shock(s) install looks to be straightforward.....I just can't see paying $90-$125 labor per shock (depending on what they "get into".....WTF?) Money saved on the WEVO weld labor, I'd say.

We'll see.....I'll take notes....

BEST!

As the bentley notes rear shock removal with car DOWN,..I've noticed a few threads where RL's have had to slightly move the trailing arm to better postion this long bolt at the bottom.......don't want to bugger up that bolt........guess one works with feel for (mal) tensions,..looking for horizontal, I would guess.

Most guys have removed the lower with wheels down,..no issues,..both IN AND OUT.

We'll see, 2-morrow.

BEST!

<frustrated sigh...>

Doyle, you obviously have learned nothing from my example. You are CLEARLY going about this all wrong! THIS is how you replace rear shocks:

1) Unbolt lower shock bolts
2) Realize that the semi-trailing arms look kind of dirty, you can't bolt new shocks into arms that are not pristine.
3) Decide that while you are cleaning up the arms, it would be a good idea to change the rear wheel bearings, bushings and parking brake hardware.
4) Realize that this obviously necessitates rebuilding the calipers to match those new parking brakes.
5) Determine that it will be easier to unbolt the trailing arms if you drop the motor and transaxle first, plus, it makes access to the upper shock nuts a breeze... hey, now we are talking efficiency!
6) Now that the motor is dropped, why not tear it down, you know, just to be sure...
7) Obviously it would be ridiculous to not rebuild the transaxle too...
8) Naturally, the front suspension and brakes will have to be re-done too to match the rebuilt rear end...

Now that, my good friend, is the right way to work on these cars!

Following the above easy steps you should have no problem replacing your rear shocks in only two years and it may only cost a mere $15K!!!

What would you do without this forum's advice?

Wow,

I'm dropping my engine because my clutch blew up last week... i think i'll stick with the Bentley for advice ... lol

Doyle, get yourself a short 17mm ratchet wrench,it'll make removing those rear shock upper bolts easier as the access is limited if you still have your air cond compressor and don't remove your airbox !

Cheers !

All went without a hitch,....will know more on the new Potenzas after that blasted coating is worn through.

The shock changeout was unremarkable (remarkably)...glad I had my Digital TechWrench torquewrench for up top.....impact made removal of the top quite easy,..it was way loosened before it could even think of spinning.. Torqued the top nut to the spec'd 18 ft-lbs....Torqued the bottom bolt to 92 ft-lbs

HUGE DIFFERENCE IN RIDE!! Nice and soft,.just as Boges should be...the old Boges were shot, especially on one side....

Can't wait to get the front end done.......

Easy-Peezy!!!!!!!!!!

BEST!

9) Borrow 500_19B's car while you perform this work.

Man, today's drives have been dramatic (considering the [still] broken sway bar mount)...I couldn't find a stamp of any kind (labels long gone) to determine production date of the removed Boges....neither one would self position after release of full compression,.....needless to say, it now feels (and IS) better dampened...SMOOTH RIDE.....Yeap, Bird,..the icing is coming....I don't plan to drive her until she gets in the shop for this repair.....mainly due to the broken sway mount and freshly loaded rubber....one of my rears showed great wear on the inner side of the tire (she never did that on the last several sets/ever),..I assume from driving it with the broken mount, broken. Don't want to take any (more)chances...

No worries here, mates. All is smooth,..especially the tires.........

BEST!

Not to mention the G50 wallowing in fresh Delvac fluid (maybe 9k miles on it,..exodus looked liked honey,..nothing on the magnet-THAT'S always a high point). It had been around 18 months, time-wise, and I do keep this fluid changed frequently (anally)........the brain at work: "Man, she is shifting better"!!!!!! [[[[[[[Tranny is, however, smooth as butter,...always has been!]]]]]]

BEST!
