Default Porsche Performance Upgrades

If you had a 89' Carrera with the G-50 in it and $10k+/- to spend, what would you do to upgrade the performance? This should be interesting! Thanks again.

We've had this conversation many times and it's always a good one.

For me I''d have to say start at the bottom and work your way up.

Personally, the interior needs to be fresh and the ride needs to be smooth....but I'd start like this:

tires/wheels

brake rotors/pads

T-bars/bushings

Then you can move on to chip/exhaust/O2/etc...

There is no point in going fast if you can't stop it and control it.

Definitely suspension and brakes. An Elephant racing "street performance 1" suspension package runs about $2K (without installation). I would then allocate $2.5K towards new brakes (new or well-rebuilt calipers, new rotors, lines, pads) and tires. Assuming you do the work yourself, that leaves $5.5K, which I would invest in a motor rebuild savings fund. Eventually you will want to do the motor and ideally it will be a thorough build.

This is assuming all the normal things (like the clutch) are OK and the car is, well, err, umm... "sorted"

Thanks to everyone so far. Am working with Steve Weiner at Rennsport in Portland, OR. Nice to get different ideas.

I like the suspension idea and some good tires and wheels, also get the brakes in good order. I then would start attending as many NCR-PCA DE and AX events as possible and learn how to drive the thing.

What do you plan on using the car for?

If just street driving - stock size fuchs and brakes are more than adequate.

I would definitely spend the money on suspension first (I did)

Then I would change the things I touch everyday - that means steering wheel, seats, shift **** (I actually like the stock g-50 ****)

If you plan on tracking the car - then I would look at 17" wheels (Zuffenhaus, Fikse or BBS) and upgrade the sways (tarrett) and bushings (elephant or rebel racing)

Engine wise - for a stock 3.2 - I'd make sure the valves are adjusted - then look at some george's European headers - and a dual in dual out sport muffler.

You'd be shocked how fast you can blow through $10K

Like Jay said - I'd set aside $1500 just for attending as many track days/autocrosses that you can - first investment should be the nut behind the wheel

g-50cab: mostly a 2-3 day per week car with some light track use. I use to drive Formula Ford, Super Ford and a little Formula 3 in Europe in the early 80's. I know how easy it is to "Blow" through track $$$! This nut needs lotsa help!!! Thanks.

Then I would probably do suspension - nothing too crazy on the TB - maybe 22/30 - I'd change all the rubber to elephant racing PB or rebel racing. Strut brace (I like the integrated strut and monoballs) I'd get/trade for a set of 16 - 7's and 8's (205 and 225 dunlop dizurra (whatever they are called)... or send my existing 16's 6's and 7's and get them upsized to 17 x 7.5 and 17 x 9 from True Design - or similar, Tarrett sways on both ends.

Bolt in/bolt out rolllbar - maybe a few sets of brake pads and under a-arm scoops to keep them cool - then go and have fun.

A sorted car would look like mine. Re-bushed, new shocks, wong chip, exhaust, ssi heat exchangers, new turbo tie rods, ball joints, basically new everything and lowered, corner balanced.

suspension: bigger sways, TBs, new bushes, strut bar
seats (Recaros or other sport seat). the stock seats suck, imo
rennshift or Wevo shifter, bushings
3-spoke steering wheel
light-weight wheels (Fuchs are the best imo) and good tires
SSIs and new exhaust (it just sounds better). weighs less than stock too
chip
lower it, align, and corner balance

Once it is all buttoned up, enjoy the snot out of it.
